Just thought i would add, i do not agree with endangered species being brought in and sold. If it is endagered in its natural habbitat, we should do as much as we can to help preserve the species, not keep them in our tanks. This wouldnt happen (legally) with rare species of Tiger etc, and i dont think it should happen with fish.
I underestand that ppl want to keep rarer species, just like myself, however if they are not even found in the wild i dont think they should be kept in our tanks.
I do not mean to offend anyone by this post, i am simply stating my opinion.

Personally, I feel everybody is entitled to his own opinions and nobody should be 'shouted' at for stating his opinion on anything, unless he is trying to impose his own 'blinkered' opinions onto others. At the same time, anybody who feels so strongly about his own opinion(s) should be prepared to practise what he preaches lest he be accused of practising double standards by those he sought to 'educate'.

By the way, guys, the fishes arrived safely and are settling in. Very few casualties so far. Let's hope there won't be more.

    there are different situations ...

sometimes conservation efforts in the wild are really not sufficient to save certain species.

there are certain aquarium species that are commonly found in our tanks now but close to extinct in their natural habitats.even the common cherry barb very nearly got wiped out in forest streams.

There are 2 ways of looking at it ..

Either the fish die a certain death in the wild, but due to principle we dont have them anywhere else,

or keep and breed them so numbers increase, while it goes extinct in the wild.

    It is a thin line.
As a fishkeeper, is it justifiable to say that it is alright to keep fish that are not extinct, while avoid those that are endangered..? Especially when aquarium trade is not the cause of extinction?

Many of these endangered fishes are not attractive at all. There is almost no commercial incentive in catching them for this purpose. But for someone with keen interest in the study of this group, it is beneficial.

Sounds like the aquarist's version of Star Trek's Prime Directive, you think.

    Hi,
I am new to keeping Cichlids.Just bought a 2ftx18"height glass tank.Would really like to keep the Frontosas. Can you advise if it is ok to keep them in this size tank?I really can't get a bigger tank coz already got a few tanks in the house...Also,if its is ok to keep them, can I get some from you?Understand the Frontosa cost quite a lot of money and really need to get them at a good price inorder to be ableto afford them.Look forward to your reply. Thanks a lot man!

Sorry, no frontosas in this shipment. All the fishes available are as listed above.

loongzai: 2' tanks are OK for frontosas when they are juveniles but would be too small for adults which can reach 9-10". Be prepared to upgrade to 4' tanks at least if you keep them to adulthood.

    yeah loongzai,
larger fish need larger tank in the long run.

Of coz frontosa will still survive in your tank size, but they will never reach the size where their real beauty truely shows, neither will they be too happy to be stunted before full size.

Finally a little free time to catch up on what's happening. Am doing my reservist training at the moment.

    eZion:
All these fishes are available as they have been recovering quite well; maybe a little too well as some of them have started fighting amongst themselves and I have had to separate them. The doviis are really nice, all the markings can already be seen even though they are still quite young.

By the way, anybody interested in Nandopsis octofasciatus 'Blue Dempsey'? I could bring them in but they are very ex. I personally don't like them and would hate to get stuck with them if I brought them in and nobody wanted them. That's why I didn't include them in this shipment. But if there is a demand, I might consider them next time round. So let's have a show of hands, please.
