    Hey guys,

I've recently gotten my hands on one of those ceiling-like MH floodlights with an external ballast.

I'm intending to use it to light up my 1.5ft cube on a cabinet. A tad overkill i know, but i've got my reasons.

    Now here comes my question/woe:

I can't drill into my ceiling because it's a false ceiling and would probably buckle under the weight of the light (It's plain chipboard i suspect) . So i'm planning on creating a stand for it. However i'm clueless as to where to get this done. Was in love wtih the ADA style hanging lights but had no idea how and where to get one made.

Anyone here have any ideas? Rough cost would be great too!

Also if you have already made or drafted a style of hanging your MH, please do show it here, it would be much appreciated!

Dude, you could try those clothes racks that are sold in neighbourhood homeware stores. Most of them are height adjustable.
    Call me Brian.

P.S. This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

Are you able to access into your false ceiling? If so get a strip of wood and place it behind the false ceiling and drill your MH through the false ceiling and onto the strip of wood. It will help.

If you cannot go into the false ceiling you can cut out a piece of the false ceiling and slide the wood in. After that use false-ceiling-powder to put the false ceiling back, follow by paint. Sounds alot of job but the result can be eye pleasing.

    Brian,

Have scouted around for the past 2 weeks, nothing that reaches up to 1.7m in height.... Have to factor in the height of the cabinet and tank + a distance between water and light.

    Nicky,

Unfortunately, it sounds like quite a bit of work, 1) my dad will have my head on the chopping board if i started drilling on his 'precious' roof. 2) The position of the tank may not be final, as such i would rather it be slightly mobile..

    Thanks for the suggestions tho!

Jerome, the its unlikely you'll find a clothes rack that will reach 1.7m in height. Will your aquarium be next to a wall? If it is, you can buy shelf brackets from places like Ikea and have them mounted on the wall instead. I have mine, a set of Giesemann replica brackets fabricated from acrylic and they look fabulous. PM me if you want a set fabricated.

That's what i thought too Splendid Warrior, but i went down to NTUC today and got myself one that went up to 1.8m!! But the dang thing cost me 40 bucks. OUCH.

Now, time to get the holes drilled and the rod cut into proper lenght.
Can't wait to get it up and running.

Thanks loads for all the response guys.
Would like to keep this thread open though, to explore further means of mounting / diy mounts of MH, i think thats an avenue least explored around in most local forums.

With the advent of cheap MH and Chillers, i think its about high time we started discussing this!

the brand is song cho - single pole rack. ard $35 from tampines mall ntuc
970 - 1650mm pole ht, excluding the leg stand.
so i would think it should hit 1.7m.

one thing to note. i could not attach the bottom horizontal poles to make the rack more secure... obviously due to having the tank in the middle.
but without attaching the wheels, the rack is stable enough to take the weight of the light pendant.

    Melvin,

Yeah i saw yours on display too, but opted to go for a slightly taller one which was much heavier and sturdier for 5 bucks (i'm trying to justify my spending of 40 bucks over a clothes rack here.. Lol)

I've sent mine to be shortened and have holes drillef for mounting the lights on it, hope it works. If it screws up, any idea where to get a replacement bar?

Also i noticed you had something around your lights (i suspect to rid the glare from the MH? I'm afraid i may need one too.. how'd you come up with that?

Splendid, how much would it cost to fabricate one like that?

i used chip board bought from popular bookshop to make sort of a canopy.
shiny paper as "reflector" inside. then put in 2 T5HO arctinic tubes and a row of LED moonlight. can't remember the cost but the tank decomm liao.
    "canopy" thrown away.

    Splendid,

Yowzers! 80 bucks! But i bet aesthetically, they're well worth it hey?

    Smallfish,

Got it from Brrrrr (Vincent), he has another one i think 150w and a very nice professional looking 250w ones going for dirt cheap prices. PM him if you're keen, i suspect he may still have them.

Melvin, i'm figuring that without the canopy it would be extremely bright around the room hey? How much are those chipboards going for? May need to make a canopy too..

you need to register to see the pics though

without the canopy, my room looks like a disco from outside... i stay on groundfloor somemore.

about S$ 28 per ballast wiring instruction on the product itself
It's not just "Step1: Add Water, Step2: Add Fish" If everything else don't work, add plastic plants and fish

Ok my setup is all set, just gotta get some screws fit it in and i'll take a photo and show it to you guys.
Now im concerned because the lighting's a bit blueish for my liking.. i think it should be around 7500 or 8000k.
Wonder how much a new bulb would set me back?
