Depends on what type of plants you're going for

Only thing to take note: Buy a large amount at one go. Plant enough such that it looks like the picture below:

That's a newly setup tank, don't let it fool you Try to achieve that density at the start. This is because it helps your tank stablise and cycle faster, important step.

i believe squee trying to let you have a rough picture on what is recommended for newly setup tanks.
the number of plants you be getting won't be amount to what is shown on the picture, as it is bigger than 2ft.
As for choice of plants, have you decide on what kind of setup planning for?

I'd set aside $50 for plants for a 2ft tank I usually buy from shops Nature Aquarium and Colourful Aquarium(next to Nature Aquarium). Search the LFS list in Aquatalk section for addresses.

Thanks. I know where the place cos sometimes i pass by there. Hee Hee. Personally i find that Colourful has more variety of plants compared to NA while NA focus on equipment. Perhaps buy more can get discount. Hee Hee.

BTW, when to introduce the SAE and the Yamato shrimps to the tank? Should SAE be introduce first cos they are less sensitive to water changes as compared to the shrimps?

Yes you're right about the shops' niches

I introduce them when I see plants growing and the water has cleared up. I usually introduce Otos first(for your case SAE), then shrimp, and finally the fish.

I seriously don't think Oto is a good first resident to be introduced into new tanks. I find them rather weak and sensitive.

Well that's for me. People are free to choose the fish they want to add in order of preference.

otos seem fine to add 1st
    no problems n no casualties

think that if cycle properly before adding fish
and acclimatize the fish properly before total release into tank they should be fine
