Latest update. Eggs found in cavity. Didn't know when the female conceive the eggs. Female was guarding the eggs but was at times ousted by the male. And even inflicted wound on the female body.

At around 10 15pm today, look into the cavity but found out only three eggs left
. Thus decided to remove the female and the male from devouring the eggs. Can anyone please enlighten me whether if the eggs are fertilize? And is it the corrective measure to remove the parents since I found out that the male is devouring the eggs. Can anyone advice? Thanks alot.

You should only remove the male fish. The female fish will take care of the eggs. Without the female apisto guarding the eggs, other fish will make a feast out of them.
My breeding tank got no other fishes. Just the eggs. So must I still put the female back? Thanks alot.
Unless you are going to hatch the eggs "artificially" which i do not have experience in and so cannot comment on it.
You should put the female inside. The eggs have to be kept with oxygen flow, and this is done by the fanning of the female's fins or tail. Without that, all the eggs will die off eventually.

They should hatch around a week later.
I wonder if this transfering and seperating of the female from her eggs would spook her and maybe she might eat the eggs?

You're damm right. Check cavity at around 1030pm today and caught no sight of the remaining eggs. Aiyah quite sad, but anyway got my first hand experience. Now waiting for the female to recuperate and get them breeding again. But how do one know if the eggs are fertilize by the male, and when to remove the male? I need to prepare myself. Thanks alot.

When you see the female guarding her eggs zealously, they should be fertilized already. Then you should remove the male or wait till the eggs hatch and remove the free swimming fries. I do the latter, works well for me.

Hmm not so in my case. though the female was defending the cave, she at times was ousted out of the cave by the male and he will devour the eggs.
Think in the next spawn, I will watch if the female is zealously guarding against the male. Then I will remove the male. Thanks alot Genes. Stay tune for part II. Are you also breeding the A.elizabethae?

Hi there,
Latest update. Female herding fries. Due to usage of white gravel, it's quite difficult to locate the fries, thus I've circle a few of them out. Last head count 15 - 18 fries. Check out the orange belly of the female.
Parents are still around. At the moment I don't have the intention to remove the male. Firstly, the female is fending off the male this time round and she's much fiercer than the male.
Secondly, there's lots of hiding places in the driftwood, thus in order to remove the male, I would have to remove every driftwood. And was afraid that this process will stunt the fries and cloud the water. Not too sure if the fries are that sensitive to water cloudiness.
Sidetrack a little bit, I used to rearrange my driftwood in my crs planted tank and this causes my shrimplets to die. That's why the hesitation. See how thing goes. Maybe a week later will siphon out the fries into another tank.
Also notice that the female will catch her baby by mouth if they wandering off limits, and will then spit the fry out to join back with gang. It worries me at first sight, cause saw her chewing and thought she was devouring her fry. But she didn't fail me. That's my observation. Maybe you already know. It's a thrill monitoring the whole breeding process.
It seems like in the second and successive spawns to come, the parents are becoming better parents. Any views?

Hey man thanks again, but it's too early to congratulate mela. Spawning maybe a success but now it's the rearing. Boy, you really need patience. Because read from krib.com that it takes about 5 months to reach a growth of about 1 inch(2.5cm).

Yup. apisto fries grow very slow. Get ready to hatch bbs to feed them.

Alamak. Fries all gone. Reason being, not removing the fries from parents when they are in the swimming stages. Cause, wanted to see if there is any possibility of cohabitating whole family together. Plus got lots of other commitments ot oversee. Will get them breeding again after exams.
