Travelling soon... Want to bring some cherries for my friend to help her set up her shrimp tank overseas... Am thinking of putting the shrimps in a small mineral water bottle, with some mosses, fill up to the brim (no air bubble) insulate it with some cloths, etc, and check it in... I don't want to leave an air bubble coz i believe that the air bubble will churn the water around if theres a lot of movement during the check in process... Will the air be sufficient?

I am thinking about 10 smallish shrimps in a 500 ml bottle... flight time is about 8 hours...

I think it gets very cold in the hold of the plane I only base this on the coldness I have noticed when unpacking, the other thing that may be an issue is that the moss would be using O2 in the dark, you could give them something like a twig to cling on. I would give them some air I think, only guessing though.

Don't fill to the brim, give them some air. Should be able to hand carry the hand rather than leave it in the cargo.

other thing to consider - the custom.
Does the destination allows live shrimps to be in?
Don't break any laws, or regerts later.
If it is available there, then set up when arrived.

Probably a sponge or a filter cotton will be good

I just put then in a plastic bottle and checked in it...
Airline regulations only prohibit water in the hand carry luggage...

didnt find any laws prohibiting bringing in fishes into the country...

Well, I managed to bring quite a bit of shrimps from Hongkong a few months back. Got 2 C grade CRS, 5 green and 40 blue shrimp in 3 packs (pre-packed except CRS). They are all in the plastic bags and I put them into my backpack (taken as hand luggage). Almost all survived when I got home. FYI, I did not have any check when I come out of the duty free shop. So maybe I was lucky. Just take my other luggages and take a cab home.

As noted in the other thread on buying fishes when overseas... The singapore customs does not prohibit bringing in aquarium fishes other than those in the CITES list. There is a limit on the number of fishes tho.

The problem lies with the other side, like in bkk, i discovered that to bring fishes out you will need a permit from the ministry of agriculture (try applying for one if you dont speak thai!), further with all the airplane scares, new rules keep popping up as to what you can bring on board a plane (i know you cant bring snakes ) The most common these days being liquids.

All quite different from those days back when you can bring anything on board (i used to carry my survival kit which contains a swiss army knife)

Where in HK did you get your shrimps? I will be there in a couple of weeks. Also do you know shops in Bangkok or Jakarta selling aquatic plants and shrimps?

I got all my fish stuff at the famous Goldfish market. Cannot remember where I got all my shrimp (get from different shops). The whole stretch of fish shops (at both sides) so need to really spend time there. I went there 3 times during my 7 day trip in Hongkong. Must admit the equipment there is cheaper and have more brands that you don't see in singapore. Better prepare a equipment list before you go.

In Bangkok, famous weekend market has some plants and fishes.

Never been to Jakarta. No idea.
