anyone know how to calculate loss of wattge in reagrds to the height from tanks. e.g. a 250W MH at 2m height from tank how many watts will it lose as compare to 2cm height to the tank?

don't know if anyone here has the formula. however, the loss will depend on the design on the reflector. if you have a mh lamp, you can try estimating the loss. measure the light coverage at different heights and derive the loss.

I think it's not the wattage lost but whether the required par is reaching the bottom.

Are you trying to light the entire room? That's quite a distance from the tank and you definitely get better results with either T5s or PCs at a closer distance.

For max height, depending on how big the tank is and what your MH wattages are, but I would say maybe 2' max if the tank isn't too deep.
