Hi, Apistogramma keepers out there, I would like to find out that can I put difference types of these fishes, mainly male, in the community tank. I am not keeping them for breeding. My tank size is 2x1.5ft. What is the maximum number I can put?

In 2ft the most 2 pairs. That's my view.

Depends on whether they're in the same complex or not for an all male group. I would say 3-4 from different complexes.

In my case, I have two pairs of A.elizabathae housed in 2ft tank next to each other. And the female will always flare at each other, ignoring the male. Maybe if the same sex they will attack. Or when they are mating, unwanted personel trespassing will also attack. This is through my observation.

Your female apisto flare at one another. Quite interesting observation actually. The other day I bought 2 male Apistogramma borelli from C328 and put into the 2ft planted tank, they tend to chase one another. Today I manage to find one female , so I put it to the tank. The two male started to flare. I think they try to show of in front of the female. I wonder how they would pair up outimately.

It is normal for the females to flare at each other... they are courting the guys too... to pass down their genes... animal instinct...

my 2 Apistogramma agassizii females have their own territory in the tank... anyone of them trespass, the other will flare at her...

Hope the other male is not killed by the ultimate winner...

    My experience...

2 pairs of Ap. Caca in a densely planted 3ft tank = death of 1 of the male.

1 pair of Ap.Caca and 1 pair of Ap. Aga in a densely planted 3ft tank = torn fins from either males.

So i'll choose to house just a pair of Apistogramma in your 2ft expecially if your apisto cost a bomb.

Thanks. i decided to keep just one pair in the tank. I don't want to end up some death. Noted the two males have been very unfriendly toward each other.

Possibly you don't have a female apisto there to cause the males fighting for her. In my case, before I add the female to the tank, the two males seems living quite peacefully together.

Then it will be a feasting on your eyes. I've just one A.elizabathae and can stare at it for the whole day. Yours so many different apistogramma species. Really envy you.

eh.. if you would like.. you can add checkerboard cichlids.. my A.agassizii just ignore the male checkerboards.. though it chases the female checkerboard around..
