I have an Eheim 2213 filter and I'm having trouble getting it started. I have it hooked up correctly ( i think) yet when I start it the motor runs for a while and nothing happens. Any help would be appreciated.

maybe you need to prime the pump.

There should be an inlet for you to fill the pump chamber with water.
what does the manual say about priming.

Fill the hoses and filter with as much water as possible. This can be achieved by placing a hand-held manual water pump at the output end and sucking water through the whole thing. Another way will be to manually suck water through the output tube using your mouth and turning on the switch when you have water flowing through.

The goal is to make sure there is as little air as possible in the filter before starting it. The Ehiem 2213 doesn't have priming if I'm not wrong.

2213 is Eheim Classic series, for sure no auto-priming. Hopefully you have taps/valves in used on the hoses. Only way to kickstart canister to work, for my experience as follow:--

    1) fill canister with water first
    2) close securely the pump head, with water outlet hose also securely tighten and place into tank
    3) inlet water hose (the tricky part) fill with water first and close tap (hopefully you have the tap/valve) and then connect into the water inlet of canister. The other end of the hose to suck the water from the tank should be safely place into the tank, ready for the finale.
4)if you have all these done correctly, open the taps/valves between the hose to enable water movement in (ie inlet hose, water will suck down by gravity) and out (ie outlet hose from pump head into tank) once you turn on the electricity to operate.

    Happy splashing time
