they can be eaten when big
in taiwan, i saw them being cooked and sold in claypots
they're called ni qiu, and they're actually clarias catfish
if you want to keep them, kiv that they are very predatory (juz look at the barbels, man) and any small fish you keep with them will go into their stomaches
when they grow big, they apparently have poisonous spines that can injure your hand, so don't catch them with your bare hands, or it'll hurt like hell
and they eat just about anything

one foot length in the wild

they are call Tor Sard in Hokkien here

    Clarias Batrachus

    gets to 50-60cm easily.

i had one before, grew from 2" to 10" in 2 months. Thats how fast it grows. But it died mysteriously at 11" plus...up till now still dont know the reason.

It will not only swallow smaller fish, but it will kill and try to eat fish it cannot fit into its mouth by grabbing and shaking it to death literally.

there are 3 major colour forms, one is the dark one you see as feeder, one is albino, and one is cream blotched kind.IMO, the cream blotched kind which was the one i had is the nicest.

THis is how mine looks like.
It is a wonderful scavenger (that snatches food at the same time) if you have a community of big fish. An interesting addtion.
