Hi
Set up a very simple tank, which I intend to keep as such for a long long period of time, even after moving out of NUS.
Here is a picture of the tank now:
Tank sitting near window and this is why you are seeing some trees in the background. Also, sorry for the cloudy water. This is because a few days ago, i had to remove almost everything to take out some rummy nose which were feasting on my shrimps.
Here is a picture of the tank with rummy nose.
Details :
3*1.5*1.5 feet
150w MH light (8hrs)
Ada Aquasoil
Chiller : 24-26
Flora:
Java fern (windelov, narrow, broad)
Java moss
Crypts
Vallisneria
Balansae
Fauna :
Rasboras (12x)
Otos (3x)
Malayan Shrimps (100x+), Cherry Shrimps(5x), Yamato Shrimps(10x)
Tank setup 1 month ago.
My lighting period is currently 8-9 hrs a day, but i intend to reduce it to 7-8 hrs. I do not want to change to PL lights, because in the first place i will have to buy one. I am still observing the high intensity of the MH lights. So far seems to be fine.
Moss are doing fine and growing fast.
Only problem, some of the top java ferns only seems to be getting green spot algae due to too much lights.
Initially I had Duck weeks, but now using skimmer, so no duck week for now.
Will post updates as the water clears.
Cheers,
Christophe

The Happiest of people don't neccessary have the best of everything;
they just make the most of everything that comes along their way
When will there be 25 letters in the alphabets?

which arrangement you are refering to: the first pic or the 2nd pic(with rummy nose)
My vote goes to the ones with the rummy noses..
All Men Die . . . . Few Actually Live.

With rummy noses, remember to post another picture when water further clears up.![]()

Haha, i will post another pic.
seems you too like the one with rummy nose. sadly when i took out the rummy nose, and had to take out all the Dw, i tried to change the placement to the first picture. this is because i did not like the open gap after the first wood on the left.
Well, hope the water clears out fast, and the ferns and crypts grows. maybe it will change for the best.
wow, swee swee set up...bro, can share where u bought all those large DW???

Christophe: I like the DW arrangement in the clearer tank. It made the tank look larger than a 3ft tank. Nice work!![]()
So you intend to leave it in NUS after you graduate?![]()

all bought from NA and C328. They are just normal bogwood.Originally Posted by coolbucks
hey chris,
with your experience with stemmed plants, i believe you can try, to do a stemmed plant layout with the second wood arrangement. the wood you have got there look gorgeous. currently i think even if you are doing a low maintenance layout, there is too much ferns tied to them. just my thoughts

Hmm, Jie Sheng, I really do not want to get into stem plants for this semester. I was too tired trimming stem plants last time for my 2 feet tank.
My low maintenance to me refers to less trimming or rearranging. I am still doing weekly water change, doing the E.I. Fert regime, etc. Just that I grew too lazy to put my hands into water all the time to trim plants. Hence the idea of java ferns and crypts and java moss growing wildly.
Hmm as for too much ferns, well i only bought worth about 8 small bunch of java fern from NA that came on pieces of wood, which i then retied to my DW.
Will keep you guys updated in the future with new pictures.

An update of the tank one week after major rescape. Water has cleared a bit.
In a week or so, i will trimm the Java moss on the front panel, just to give them a more tidy look on the very front side.
Still waiting for the vallisneria and Balansea to pick up.

looking great!![]()

After 2 weeks or so, here is an update.
I added 10 boraras maculatus and 1 SAE. For some reasons, most of my malayan shrimps died.
Plug in some more vallisneria from bro Taz_Boy (Ivan), added a piece of wood with US fissiden.
I have also changed my 150w MH to a 2x36wPL (8000K). Plants are doing better. And the room looks less messy!
There are now plenty of new leaves from the rhizome of my java ferns. Yeah! And those at tips of leaves will have to be fix to wood pretty soon.
I have been trimming my Java moss on the DW and the carpet, hoping they would grow more compact. Will it?

loooks like trimming time?? it needs a little more form to it.. but its looking great..

Aqua bro, just curious, is your tank water now cleared? Or it's just the picture playing tricks? Because it does look abit cloudy to me. I like your tank layout, but personal preference, using spiky moss as foreground would look better for you. Just my 2cent worth

hmm, water is not cloudy. Just that lights from the window and tank playing some tricks.
well, why i chose java moss is that i never really use it before. I have tried spiky for a few tanks. I prefer it on DW rather than carpet to be honest.
Regards, Christophe

Ranma, trimming?? hmm, i am waiting for the plantlets to grow bigger, and for the ferns to grow more before i give it a form.
hey chris,
it is looking great. for a moment, i thought it was a 4 feet tank rather than a 3 feeter, cause the photo looks kind of long.
well i think the fish will enjoy the tank you have got there. in hindsight, the fish look a bit small ain't it?
