Stick to stuff that list the ingredients, you know should what's going in.
In general you need 2 types of fert, liquid and solid.
The solid stuff, you stick into the gravel for the plant roots. You need this for plants with roots in the substrate. Rosette plants, like echinodorus, crypts, lotus, etc, will need this stuff in particular. Commonly mentioned ones are Jobe Sticks, Root Monster, JBL 7-Balls, Seachems Flourish Tabs.
The liquid stuff, you add to the water for plants to absorb thru stems, leaves and above-substrate roots. Careful with this, over dosage can cause algae problems. If you do not have a lot of fast growing stemmed or floating plants, reduce the recommended dosage. Often mentioned brands, Seachem Flourish, Tropica Master Grow (TMG), Dupla (expensive).
Liquid fert also come in many forms. The one for general use are the ones that dose trace fert. Eg. Seachem Flourish. There are some that supplement certain nutrients like Iron(Fe) and Potassium(K). Iron is for redder red plants, Potassium is to balance the N-P-K levels in your tank.
Start with one type of solid fert and one general liquid fert. Later figure out if you need Fe and K.
Personal, I use Seachem's Flourish series, Root Monster and Jobe.
