I went to the shop and found 101 stuff from plant fertilizer to plant nutrient... solid to liquid form, and verious brands.

I wish to ask what is a recommended brand and nutrient should a newbie like me buy for a 2 feet plant tank.

    Thanks a million

Stick to stuff that list the ingredients, you know should what's going in.

In general you need 2 types of fert, liquid and solid.

The solid stuff, you stick into the gravel for the plant roots. You need this for plants with roots in the substrate. Rosette plants, like echinodorus, crypts, lotus, etc, will need this stuff in particular. Commonly mentioned ones are Jobe Sticks, Root Monster, JBL 7-Balls, Seachems Flourish Tabs.

The liquid stuff, you add to the water for plants to absorb thru stems, leaves and above-substrate roots. Careful with this, over dosage can cause algae problems. If you do not have a lot of fast growing stemmed or floating plants, reduce the recommended dosage. Often mentioned brands, Seachem Flourish, Tropica Master Grow (TMG), Dupla (expensive).

Liquid fert also come in many forms. The one for general use are the ones that dose trace fert. Eg. Seachem Flourish. There are some that supplement certain nutrients like Iron(Fe) and Potassium(K). Iron is for redder red plants, Potassium is to balance the N-P-K levels in your tank.

Start with one type of solid fert and one general liquid fert. Later figure out if you need Fe and K.

Personal, I use Seachem's Flourish series, Root Monster and Jobe.

    Hi,

How much to dose Fe and K? What are the deficiency symptoms for these two nutrients? I got some E. Quadricostatus that is often "holey" at the leaves tip and sometime it appears in new leaves too. Is this a sign? What about lighter colour leaves on different plants of the same type. I'm using SC Flourish and Horti stick.

K deficiency is more noticeable in old leaves. Symptoms are pinholes. Yours could be a sign. If you like can dose with Lo-Salt (which is 66% KCL available from NTUC or Cold Storage).
There are several nice planted tank articles at Chuck's Planted Aquaria Articles.

For the site, the Juggler suggested, look for the article that helps you calculate the dosage.

Well, if you can't figure it out from the articles... you can get Flourish K and FLourish Fe and follow the instructions. Observe and adjust.

I reduce the FE dosage amount by half and increase the K dosage frequency.
