Is this ok?

Jus bought an internal filter for my 1.5ft tank. it's running on about 180L per hr. i put it to the lowest. is it too strong? i still find it abit strong. i'm hiding it behind my driftwood with xmas moss so that can conceal it as well as to block some of the water flow so it won't be too strong. actually where should i place it? just below the water surface? i'm placing it in the middle of the tank. please advice..thanks alot

Raymond, I don't have any experience with internal filter but the principle should be the same as external fitter. Just site your filter to generate the best water circulation. As for the current, if you moss isn't uprooted and swirling around the tank, it should be fine.

If you find it too strong, direct the output diagonally against the wall of the tank. As for height, not too near the surface to minimise surface turbulence, but near enough to see some movement and help break up some of the surface scum.

The Ehiem 2006 and the Eden series are quite small.

Raytan, your filter is just right. Don't worry about strong current, soon your filter will be clogged and the amount water flowing through will be very much reduced. U need to clean the filter frequently( at least once a week) otherwise algae will start to grow.

I disagree. I have 2 internal filters and I only clean them once a month or so. No unusual algae problems.

The key is heavy planting and moderate bio-load.

Vincent, thats because u have 2 filters in a tank. If u use just one, u leave it for 1 month and then check the filter , then u will understand what I mean.

Only my experience.

I had only one eden 304 in my 2ft. Had not clean them for a month at times. Didn't get any algae problems either.

However, if I did not clean my filter for that long period, the filter gets so choked up till there is practically no more flow. Prolly this is what you meant, wks?

If you're talking about choking, yes that will happen. But if you're talking about algae, I don't get any unusual algae problems from them.

In any case, there isn't a prescribed cleaning period. Clean your filter when it gets too slow or if your water quality starts to go down. After a while, you'll know what is the cleaning interval for the filters in your tanks.
