what is the life of a typical canister filter? failure due to motor wear.

I hv got a dymax 5 that stopped running, the motor unit is exceptionally hot as compared to normal with a weird smell. Able to run after cool down for a while.
Hv been using it for nearly 2 yrs already. Cleaned recently.

Depends on the brand and quality of the canister. Reports from over the world had folks using eheim filters for over 10+ years without major failures except for changing seals and etc.

I am using made in china dolphine canister filter, still running after 3 years. My other one, same brand, but higher flow rate... leaked after 1.5 years.

For Eheim, 6~10 years is not uncommon. They may be abit more expensive but they are extremely reliable and you get local support and good service.

I'll rather get a 2nd hand Eheim than a new Chinese brand filter.

Found Atmen filter also reliable and affordable and if motor not working just buy new set. This way you get everything changed pipe and hose.

I have a Tom FT-2 filter that has been running for 4 ro 5 years. Have to replace because 2 of the clips that attach the top motor part and the canister part broke. Else I would still be using it.

Eheim and eheim .... gone trough salt water, dry period and all for very long time 10+ years. What left of the canister shell is still there and I simply use a powerhead to supply the water after the original motor/blade are beyond repair. The oldest I have with me must be more than 15 yrs and still running as DIY scrap filter. That shows not only it is reliable and able to run long haul but it does endure time as well (as in putting on storage). I also got an eheim aquarium 80W water pump and it ran trough salt water and fresh water as well for like 10+ yrs and it is still in use now. I can say that Eheim made "indestructible" products, and hopefully the legend continues to the future.

Sure they cost something like 3x nowadays chinese brands, but it is all worth it. It does run more than 3x as long and with spare parts available that years can go on further.

got a Fluval 304 for the replacement. What suprised me was that the priming was SO easy. According to the instruction given, i did not even fill the canister with water before i prime. What I did was simply gave a few strokes and water started filling the canister. When filled, i just plug in and everything else is automatic. It started to purge out extra air by itself and in less than a min, was running smoothly and quietly. Even much easier than the ecco i had for another tank.
What a contrast to some who claim that they need to get a separate priming kit for their 2026 or something like that
