I would recommend the use of a good Hang-on-filter or a small cannister filter like Eden 501 (Abit overkill though.. but it works perfectly for me).

    Eden 501 will be good
With HOB filter, you dont have much choice to control the water flow(output)

There's another filter that I've been using recently, Seven Star brand, or something like that. It comes with a media basket which I think is a pretty good addition to the filter. It helps make filter maintainence a little easier. It's also bigger and holds more media, which I also thought was a nice touch. It's reatiling for around $50 - $60 depending on the shop you buy it from.

For hang-on-filters, maybe the Eheim Liberty series will work nicely for you. It allows you to adjust the output and has quite a large media compartment.

I have never used it personally though.. perhaps someone experienced might want to comment on its suitability for your purpose.

As fond as I am with the Eden 501 filters, for a 1ft they are certainly overpowered and too much equipment overhead. For a 1ft (12 liters, right?) I am also advocating a nice little inexpensive hang-on filter (Azoo, Eheim Liberty, AquaClear or similar).

I am using the Liberty 100... I like it alot cos it's very quiet and really good at keeping the water clear.

They certainly would like to have it that way. But of course you can cut a piece of common filter sponge to size, or use filter wool.

any space to put some other medias like Ceramic rings or biohome after the filter wool?

I guess so. Hagen even includes ceramic rings with their AquaClear hang-on filters, but it's really more of a gadget. Don't expect significant biological filtering from the small hang-on filters. Which is okay, really. Biological "filtering" takes place in the tank, too.
