Where can I get water fleas or other tiny aquatic life? I wish to breed them. Would a pond do? I am doing a nano planted tank and I want it to be 'realistic'.

Not sure if this is even possible. If you nano has a filter the little criiters will easily be sucked into it. In nature small water critters would generally be found in small ponds with very little water movement.

Why don't you do your nano with a few small fish like Killies and then put a bucket of water outside in the shade, you will get lots of mosquito larvae to feed the fish with. Or you could start a daphnia culture or something?

Oopsie, sorry about that, Budak also mentioned this in another thread somewhere. Apologies for the bad advice !

If the container has a lid surely it would be safe enough? But then again it's better not to take any chances.

It is also illegal to purposefully breed mosquitoes in Singapore because of Dengue Fever, Cameron.

Sunfire, you can try to buy a bag of fleas (boon) and try to keep them in a very fine net in a tank itself... Some will be confined within the tank... Either that or keep only 1 or 2 lifebearers with a bag or 2 of the fleas (boon) in a 2ft tank lit by natural sunlight.
