hi i just saw these fishes in my friend's house.. i realise they are living in very poor condition and since my friend is giving them away, i decided to have them.. cause i see those fishes so pitiful .. anyway i need help to identify one of the cichlids below.. it is the pink color cichlid in pic 1,2 and 5.. what type of cichlid is it.. the other cichlid is a frontosa.. i tried asking my friend what cichlid the pink color is but he said duno.

and to xfer the fishes to my new tank.. i need to get the filter from my friend's tank also right.. in order for cycling. the pH level should be around 7 to 8? please guide me thanks.

Wow.... that frontosa is worth quite alot.. be careful when you move him. Yes, it's a good idea to reuse your friend's filter as well. And you're correct on the pH too but more importantly your kH should reflect their natural environment keep it around 5 - 6.

Note: get someone elses opinion before you start affecting the kH. I'm more of a Singapore Native Fish person.

hmm.. can some1 explain the relationship between pH and kH?
so if i wana xfer the 2 fishes to my tank.. must i reuse the old water from my friend's tank and add in new dechlorinated water? as you can see from the picture. the water level is so low i wonder the fishes can survive in such condition..

Personally what I'd do is search the Internet for information on the Frontosa. I used to use Seachem's products; they have products that can replicate the environment of cichlids, like Seachem Tanganyika Buffer. I just add them and my cichlids were fine.

When you setup your own tank, fill it up with normal tap water and add in a dechlorinator like Seachem Prime, then add in the Seachem buffers and let the tank cycle till it's ready. The cichlids should be stored in a bucket (seperated so they don't fight) with their original tank water inside. Drip acclimatise them to your tank condition.

Get some rocks, scatter them around, get some sand for a sand bed.

    Hi,

Your pink fish looks like a Jewel Cichlid? They are very pretty fish when conditions are good although they are inexpensive as compared to your frontosa. Try to search for other photos to confirm.

yar they are indeed jewel cichlid.
but something puzzles me.. i just read up the 2 fish info at aquahobby.

and the site said that jewel cichlid pH 7.5 gH 12
while frontosa pH 8.3 gH 22

how come the 2 fish can survive for so long?? my friend told me he bought the fishes almost a year ago.. strange.. unless both type are hardy fishes.

    h

Usually aquarium fish can survive even if they do not live in the exact water parameters. But they would defiantely appreciate it.

Can I add Kalkwasser to increase alkalinity and more calcium for them.

Heard they can live in large group cordially if water is to their liking.
