Actually, my fiancee prefers plants with the furry leaves.
Come to think of it, she likes her things furry. Handbag, shoe, handphone pouch...
I've been through what you are going through last year. I was away as a missionary and every time I come back, the tank is algae infested. That was because of inconsistent fertilisation. (Dose when can remember to). Using an auto doser fixed the problem, till the CO2 bottle ran out.
Eventually I went low light, non-CO2 and no problems anymore.
Perhaps you want to try an autodoser or go low-tech.

Have you done any to combat the algae?

gosh! it's truly infested with algae. did you instruct your wife to dose any fertiliser for you? I'm curious what's the outcome of the tank? Did you managed to overcome it?
Fatherhood - The most challenging role a man can take on but, funnily enough, the most fulfilling too.
fwah this is shocking man~

It should be caused by irregular water change. She changes it whenever she likes.. sometimes once a week sometimes once a month, somtimes 20% sometimes more than 50%. I cant say anything...![]()
I'll leave it as it is and rescape when I get back.. Afterall all the plants there are cheap plants.

I find irregularity of fertilisation to be a bigger culprit. If the CO2 is constant, and the fertilisation non limiting, I find I can go for 4 weeks without a waterchange if I use medium lighting intensity.
But in my case, the fiancee doesn't like measuring out the different chemical-sounding ferts, so she conveniently skips adding ferts a few times when she had a hard day at work (and who doesn't?)
I've learnt that when we ask someone else (who doesn't share our interest and commitment) to take care of our tanks, we need to make it as work-less as possible. When my tank was converted to low tech, the problems ceased immediately.
My instructions to her then was just "Darling, take a look at the fishies once a day and tell me if anyone has been naughty ok?" That she'll do gladly because they have something to report about, and don't be surprised, they start to name your fishes.![]()

I used to fear converting and think there's a lot of work to be done and I need to tear down the tank in order to convert. In practice, I realised that with my old tanks (2-3 years old lapis substrate with all the mulm inside) it is just doing a water change to convert. Well sort of like that. Here's what I did.
I just cut down the light to 1.5 - 2 WPG, turn off the CO2 and do a water change, dosing back one-third the amount I normally dose.
In the first week, some plants start to melt. (Have to resist turning on the lights and CO2) Remove the dead leaves, resist water change. Weekend, dose one-third amount, no water change. By second week, the plants have put back new growth, but with smaller leaves. I do a trim on the 3rd weekend to remove the old high-lighting, BBA infected leaves and dose one-third strength fert, again no water change, and the tank is converted.
Because of the lower demand for fert, I could even mix the Kno3, KH2PO4 into one solution, put it in a pump bottle and instruct to pump 6 pumps each weekend with the topup water. It seems to be more agreeable with my lady to dose using the pump bottle than to measure using a syringe. When I come back, I'd drop in a spoonful of Seachem equilibrium and that's all I need to do.
The 'scape stays for much longer after a trim too. Not necessarily bad, unless you did poorly with the scissors.![]()

update of the tank after trimming by wife

your wife gives you a helping hand? So you switched to low-tech already?

hahaha your macrostoma look so confused... it's pretty cute.
Hmm... one would expect women to be better at something that's basically underwater gardening... I mean, this is the only hobby where you'll see guys going crazy over a flower

OOPS!Sorry... they looked like macs from that view

cwtan12, may I know what is the purpose of your thread here cause it's escalating into a chit-chat session?

It actually looks nicer with all the algae.. kinda mysterious..
If algae.. have a lot... if not algae.. no algae.. the worst in in the middle.
