I just cleaned my filter yeserday and after rinsing the filter material, i left the trays outside exposed to air for about 5-6minutes. Just wonder if the beneficial bacteria can survive when exposed for so long?
There will be no more deaths after the holocaust. Of course, having 3 fishes in my 400L tank helps.

I'm not sure about this, but I'm prepared to bet the BB in the inner layers of the media survive.

If yours is a planted tank, loss of BB shouldn't be a problem since the tank itself can be considered a filter already. Plants/substrate also hold bacteria and plants absorb nitrogen sources.
