could be due to the excessive digging of the gravel?

look at my Parotocinclus jumbo !!! he had he snout neatly sliced off leaving a red oval cross section. the only predator in the tank is a young Macrobrachium rosenberghii whose pincers are not quite long enough to do the slicing in one chomp.
what happened!? any one?

this is an amoured cat, it doesn't dig in the substrate, it scrapes algae.

Choy, i think it might be a very strangely located ulcer... Poor thing...

Work of it trying to swim up some internal filter? Was it supposed to be pointy? Poor thing... Looks painful...

Chip in glass with sharp exposed edge?

Any sharp edged rocks / deco in the tank?
- eric

actually there is a big rock with some sharp edges, but I don't see how it can shear off the snout (this is an armoured cat, after all) and it is sheared across the fish.

But the qiu qiu is not armoured right? And a P. jumbo is not exactly armoured at the bottom from the looks of the pictures...
Also, a Paraotocinclus isn't as armoured as other Loricaridae imo...

don't know leh, the direction of the wound doesn't look like it occurs from the fish swimming forward, it is perpendicular to the swimming direction. and it is not a small nick, such a large slice!

Hi Choy,
Have to agree with you, the cut look too clean to be caused by abrasion. Armoured or not, fishes are not dumb, if it hurts, they wouldnt' keep repeating their actions.
Could it be the snout was caught in thread (used to tie plants)? Coupled with struggle or sudden movement?
Do update us when the mystery is solved.
- eric

don't have any threads in the tank, and plants are practically gone (all eaten by the barbs). The only glass implement is the ADA Glass Beetle but that is such a beautiful smooth glassware.

Have they been seen recently?

I had the impression that these are usually available even in shops like C328 every once in a while.

Seen them last a month ago at C328, plenty of them, not sure if there are any left now. I think there were P. spilosoma as well.
