Sump tank is using another smaller tank outside of your main tank as the filtration system.
Where water flows from main tank via a piping into the smaller tank where all the filter media is.
After going through a series of filtration media, the water is pumped back into the main tank.
If you ever been to a chinese restaurant, you probably seen a tank that is totally filled with sand, coral and filter wool.
that's one example of sump tank.
