Oceanfree Dual 9w PL light - I bought one set of these.
It looks like a normal PL light.

But when I switch it on, it's incredibly hot to touch after some time. Nearly burnt me when I brushed against it accidentally.

Is this normal? I bought it from NA. Is it something to do with the ballast? Can NA replace the ballast with e ballast? Thanks for the advice!

It is very hot. I myself owned one of those long ago.

It's the iron core ballast that's causing all the heat.

    Hi Terence,

Sounds dangerous, are you still using it? Any risk of the thing bursting into flames?

I used to use it. I suspect it burnt out once; I opened the casing and there was melted rubber.

The whole thing is very poorly assembled; the wires inside were wrapped haphazardly and were touching the ballast. There were no ventilation holes if I remember correctly. I discovered the switch wasn't working and soldered the wires together. It worked after that.

Iron core ballasts are all hot, electronic ballasts less so. Burst into flames? Little chance imho

Most of our light set use for lighting up our home are using Iron core ballasts in the past. As long as it comply with the safety rules standard, it is not dangerous.

The disadvantage of Iron core ballasts is the heat. Changing/choosing an E-ballast will cost you more.

How and where to repair/change to e-ballast ?

My PL light's ballast is 'burned'...I feel the need to change to a less heated ballast.

    Update

I've converted the lighting system into eBallast. The original set - one light blew out after 3 weeks. I decided to switch it to 2 x 11 PL lights - the 4 pin ones.
Cost me a lot of money for this experiment. The system uses 2 x e-ballast for 2 PL lights. Some issues to work out with the wiring, but I am pleased with the increased brightness.

    photos coming.
