Do these 2 filter media used in Ehein cannister filters need to be replaced periodically? The original set in my 2224 had been in there since i got it, 4 years+ ago. I open up for washing every 6-10 months.
Should i buy new ones to replace or just save the money as old ones are biologically/mechanically same?

If only the filtering media is worn out or clogged like the cotton stuff..if not it is alright to clean the media and use it again...but for carbon u need to change it at least once a month. Most important, never replace all the media at the same time because the good bacteria will be reduced to a state before cycling starts and could be dangerous to your fish.

when they get so clogged that they look black no matter how hard you wash them, it's time to change
i had to change mine after the first two yrs

as for carbon, it can get exhausted in as little as 1 day if the tank is heavy on organics/meds/dyes
but it'll still do fine as a biological medium

lifespan of Ehfisubstrate abt 2 years at most 2.5.
    thats the effective lifespan.

of coz one can use for 20years also ,
just a matter of effficiency loss.

the reason why ehfisubstrate is so powerful is coz of its immense surface area. And by looking at it you know that they are microscopic pores. And you cannot see when microscopic pores get choked.

You mean you use only floss inside your cannister filters?
Last time when my 4 footer was still around, with dual cannisters, i made one "biological" and one "mechanical". One having more "solid" than wool media and vice versa.

that kind of setup doesn't work quite the way you want it to
the gunk from the tank can crud up the biological one very quickly, so it doesn't work very well
the mechanical one will end up being more effective
in the end, it's better to have the filters performing all their tasks together, not trying to split them

i use filter floss because it's cheap, has quite good surface area (especially if you compact it), can polish the water, is lightweight, and is easy to find everywhere
