Having a lot of hiding palces (Driftwood, plants etc...) shouldnt be a problem.
I think many budding apistogramma hobbist have at some point tried to keep two or more different species of apistogramma in the same tank with ghastly results... with one of the more aggressive fish killing the rest of their tank mates...
My personal experience is that my Apistogramma Agazissi and Apistogramma baenschi "Inka 50" dont go quite well together... (and i have to set up a new tank for them)...
But the 4 ft feels empty with only the A.baenschi "Inka 50" ... and the apisto dark side is calling... Are there tried and tested apistogramma combinations we can rely on? the smaller ones perhaps?

if you want to mix, you can try to mix slender bodies (Apistogramma Trifasiata, A.Pertensis) with the broad bodies (A.Cacatuiodes, A.agasizzi, A.njsenni)
[I]Edit: Please don't use shorts forms for the names. There ARE people who don't know what you will be saying...[Thank you. Help us to educate./I]

Hi Memnoch, Apistogramma baenschi and Apistogramma sp. "Algodon I" are notorious for their aggressiveness even when they are not in breeding mood. I personally tried mixing with other fish like corydoras, tetras, live endlers, killie fish, rams and it ended with disastrous result. They should be kept alone.

i have male A.agassizii mixed together peacefully with endlers, neon tetra, platy, corydoras, oto, SAE.. been a couple months and still very peaceful.. no chasing around.. i guess got to depends on each character..

I too had no problem with Apistogramma agassizii before. Thats why I thought it would be alright for these two apisto species, well I was proven wrong.
Oh dear...
I have moved my Apistogramma baenschi "Inka 50" into the 4 ft tank coz my A.agazissii was down with pop eyes... and had to be moved into the smaller 1.5ft tank for medication...
But so far seems quite okay... No aggression to the non cichlids...

I am keeping the quite a few male species together.. so far all right but there are occasional hiccups.. recently i placed i male A.agassizii in the apisto community tank and it terrorized every apisto. I literally could see the male A.agassizii occuping 3/4 of the tank while the rest occupied the rest....
Thus i feel it really depends not just the species but the character of the fish as well...
presently in male apisto community tank
1. A.pertensis
2. A.trifasciata
3. 2 A.cacatuoides triple red
4. A.Bitaeniata Orange 'Río Ambyiacu"
5. Apistogramma eremnophyge "Rio Itaya"
6. Holland Ram
7. Clown Killie
8. 2 badis badis

wah.. how big is your tank? even so, is not advisable to put so many aggressive fishes together? maybe 2 - 3 pairs will do..![]()

His is a all male tank...
It seems that apistos can be relatively peaceful when not in spawning mood...will still flare up a little, but less intent to occupying and guarding any territory in general
thanks memnoch for the clarification..
all male fishes..... a little aggression but so far ok....
