    Hi folks,

I have just rescaped my tank into a low-tech tank with java fern and crypts. Currently fishes in it include a pair of Ap. Cacatuoides, 2 rocket pencilfish and 2 otos....

Question is: I would like to add in a group of small fishes, which would you recommend? I have boraras marculatas or ember tetra in mind, maybe a group of 10 only.....thanks!

Have you think of what happened when your Ap. Cacatuoides breeded? Others fish may eat your Ap. Cacatuoides's fris

it's just a thought, ive had adult A.cacatuiodes at 3 inches so i think the embers would be eaten, if you can get hold of some lampeyes they usually stay near the surface and out of the A.cacatuoides mouth. haha

I am having the same consideration like yours.. i ended trying 2 blue tetra in my tank... so far ok... but i really prefer ruby or ember tetras..

not sure whether they willl eaten because they swim fast. the issue is that they be may get stressed and white spots appear...

If the apsito's pair can get along well & you are into breeding them. I dont see the need to add other fish. By not adding other fish, i am sure more fries will survive

I kind of feel a little bored with just 2 fish in the tank so prying on the idea to have a few more small tetras to add a little life and excitement to the tank..... I'll probably get 6 little ember tetras from biotope this week....currently my male is busy choosing his mate from the 2 females in the tank, once chosen the unwanted female will be removed

Hey jeff, you mean the tetras being eaten or stressed?

Boraras will be a good choice imho. I suspect they will school too because of the big Apisto lurking around Which will be a nice sight.

No personal experience though. I've only kept cardinals with my old A.agasizzii.

Err... Given the size of the Boraras, think they just will fit the size of the mouth!

    Hi Valice,

We have stocked Apistogrammas with our boraras maculatus together before, nothing happens. We have also tried stocking them with ruby tetras, microrasboras, and other tetras. So far they seem to mind their own business.

But we do feed them regularly.

    Cheers

Totally agree. I reckon all fishes will eat your fries if they have the chance to. Unless your dithers consists of all otos. The best is not to add dithers to ensure high survival rate of fries.

Forget about rocket pencils. I used to keep them with my Ap. Cacatuoides pair and their fries. The moment the fries gets bold and swims upwards away from female, they get eaten by the rocket pencils.

Oh, and my brigittae all got eaten up by the male cacatuoides. Saw him hunting them down during the night.

If you are trying to breed then i would advise against any dithers. For my breeding tank, i have a pair of endlers as dithers which i intend to remove once there are fries.

In my male community tank, i put in blue tetras cos they are slightly bigger and will not be eaten by the 4 male apistos

Is this the Ap. Cacatuoides that just spawned? Do you intend to keep the previous fries and these together?

Yes, this is the pair of Ap. Cacatuoides which spawned last month... their previous batch of fries are kept in a separate grow up tank.... currently its only this pair in one tank, I will have to remove the male and house him somewhere while the female watches over the eggs for the time being....

still deciding when I should net out the male?
