    Hi,

Are there examples of tank setup that do not have base gravel? Only Driftwood, and perhaps some rocks, or plants tied to the DW?

I've seen some amazon biotope tanks, but they all seem to have some gravel, is it necessary, other than for aesthetic purposes?

If you are not planting plants into the substrate, there isn't any reason why you need to have a substrate.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

For biotope tanks, it depends on what fishes you want to keep and what type of biotope...

If you keeping cories, it is imperative to have gravel for them to sift through for food... If you doing African/Great Lake the gravel will help you with the water parameters...

you can use moss tie on the wire mesh for foreground, no substrate require.
