you should place them at opposite ends (long side) of your tank. you can add a power head to improve circulation.

On a 3 foot (90X45X45) tank is it best to
1. place the intake and return both on the same side of the tank (return high, intake low)
2. Place intake on one side of the tank and the return on the back of the tank facing forward?
Which would cause the water circulation better?
or would it be best to have the intake on one side and the return on the other side so that the water is being pushed from one end to the other? (though for me that would result in needing to extend the hose 3 feet as my filter can only be placed on the left hand side of the tank due to where it is located.
Thanks

If you don't wish to extend the hose, then option 2 would be better IMO.
Place the intake on the left side and the rainbar on the back of the tank.(slightly nearer to the surface.)
Planted tank? You might consider adding another powerhead somewhere further at the other end for better water circulation.![]()

So the best way is one on each end, guess that means the extended hose.
You are right that isn't something I look forward to as I am using a Eheim 2215 on a 90cm (3 foot) tank, so the extra hose lenght will slow it down more.
The option two would be preferred though right now set up as option one.
will try option 2 out and see.

I'm amazed at how much a planted tank can slow down water circulation. I bought a Atman CF800 which is supposed to be for 3ft tanks, using it on my 2ft and I can't see plants swaying except for those near the output.
