anyone knows if there is a expire date for ADA soil?
Why is my soil turing to powder form?
i suspect that its the snail that breaks them down.
Any bros have the same problem?

The snails are Malaysian Trumpet Snails? They might be tunnelling around so your Aquasoil becomes powder from all that movement.

Aquasoil breaks down into it's soil form over time. Have you been messing it up due to frequent rescaping etc?

Aquasoil has been reported to last 5 years.

    Malaysian Trumpet Snails....
bro, any way i can kill them... there seems alot of them in my tank.
My puffer seems to be too fat to hunt them.
Now that my ADA is powder form, should i change them?

How bad is it? Any good pictures?

The forum might have some solutions, do a search I've never encountered MTS before. They only show themselves when there are no lights I think, otherwise they stay in the substrate.

I'd change if I were you, or maybe let us give our opinions if you can a picture.

Oh yeah...btw heard from some hobbylists that ADA soil onli can last 3 yrs. After that it will slowly break down to power form. Got ppl still suggest drying it under the sun which i dun think its a good suggestion thou.

If you have MTS multiplying rapidly, it could be because you are overfeeding your fishes and there is excess food lying around.

Based on my own experiences, puffers do not help much in controlling MTS population. In fact, it seems that the MTS merely hides in the substrate in the presence of a puffer. Once the puffer is removed you can literally see them emerging from the substrate.

Also, when you do change your substrate, it is good to check your plant, tank walls, DWs etc for snail eggs. The snail eggs can last for a very long time out of water. Using boiling water only works to a certain extent on these eggs which are laid in a circular jelly like thing with a hard casing. MTS can even lay eggs in your filter and pumps.

If you are dosing chemicals, make sure you dose at least one more time about one week after the first dose.
This is because the eggs are hardly affected by the chemicals. By dosing one more time after the first dose you can kill the babies that emerge too.
Had so much problems with MTS last time

Using chemicals will probably render your tank an off-limit to other invertebrates...

Well, its true that these MTS areated the soil but at the same time they dissovled my ADA soil into powdery form. Do these pests feed on plants as well? If yes, that explained why my foregound plant all died!!

I must also agree that using Chemical will have some side effect in my planted tank but do you guys have any other idea than "Puffer Fish" & "Chemical"?

They do aerate the soil but too many of them is really quite a turn off. They do feed on the more tender plants as well in my case.

As to getting rid of them, you should try not to overfeed your fishes to minimise the amount of waste

Don't think they will eat your plants if they are healthy. they will help to remove dying plants like melted crypts. Which is good...

Try Khuli Loach. I have them in my tanks and they dramatically reduced the MTS population. They may have feed on the snails but they also remove excess food that the MTS thrives on.
