I just did an African setup for a new tank and I'm looking at the main fish choices for the tank (3x1.5x2).

How big can any regular Angelfish get? I thought they were suitable because my tank is quite tall, but I see from pictures that they can grow rather big and my tank is only 3ft in length.

How fast do they take to grow big? I still have at least 2 months before the scape matures.

Angelfish grows very fast if feed well and if the tank is not populated. I think they will grow to about two third of your palm size and stop in your 3ft tank.

Why would you want anglefish in your African setup (I am assuming yours is a West African River setup)? There are African fish that you can try. If you are looking for African cichlids, the Kribs and their relatives would be good. And they are reported to breed easily. A school of African tetras or killies as dithers would complete the African look.

I'm not going to turn the whole tank into Africa. It just happened that most of the plants I used happened to be from there.

No particular reasons for the Angels. Just want to try them because I want to utilize the tank height. If they are too big, then I guess I will settle for a school of Congo tetras instead.

I think that justikanz's idea is really good. Since you have an african setup why not add some african fishes to make it a biotope tank.
It would complete the look and the kribs will add bright colours to your tank too. Just my 2 cents' worth

I would consider Congo Tetras too. For a 3 ft tank, you can probably keep only 2 angel fish if you intend to let them grow up to adulthood. They are pretty territorial during mating season.

2 months to maturity...Is is a Chinese New Year setup?

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I have been looking at Congo Tetras but the ones I see look sickly. Anywhere to recommend?

It's for ADA 07 so the fish are purely for show. Not going to let them breed or grow. Once their colours are out and the scape is mature, I'll shoot and tear down!
