I use to keep 20 different speices of apistogrammas and bred 15 of them. A few more then 5 to 10 differnt times. I still have a pr of gold cockato triple reds and gold orange flash. I thank one of the reason Apistogrammas have a up and down population in keepers is that.
1. A lot of new keepers of Apistos get into them to try the breding to make money.
2. they then findout that there hard to get rid of and replace just a female or just a male.
3. Once they get into them they findout that the more rarer and harder to find is what everybodys wanting and can't afford $100 to $50 for a rare pair.
Most of the USA apistogramma spices, A.cacatuoides, A.agassizi, A.trifasciata. and the differnt lines in those speices. Then the market is flooded with them and they end up either selling dirt cheap or giving away to friends. I have looked for a few new spices to get back into them. But like 90% of the hobbiest. I have to work on a budget and my budget dosn't account for $100 pair of Apistogrammas. I have a family and foods more important then fish. Like must of us. I have found I can make more money on bettas then I can on Apistogrammas and sell them 5 times faster then Apistos. I'd sell all my A.cacatuoides 'Gold's for $35 just to open up a couple of tanks for bettas.
I have 21 tanks and have gotten rid of most of the Apistogrammas for bettas
