Happy New Year to everyone !!!

On the 2nd last day of 2006, my friends & I went to hike along the montain ridge in between Gunung Serapi & Gunung kayan. The altitude is in between 2,000 feet to 2,600 feet. Temperature = 21 degree Celcius.

It rained continuously for 2 days in southern Sarawak. It was a bad idea to go hiking in the rain but it's better than doing nothing during the long weekend holiday.

All the photos below are taken using my old digital camera so the image's quality is not so good.

Hiking along the misty mountain ridge. It's very wet & cold up there & the trail is infested with leeches !!! I think we are the only 3 crazy people up there. Our destination is the summit of Gunung Kayan which is located in the western part of Gunung Serapi area:

You won't see this small waterfall during the dry season:

Casuarina sp. (Probably C. nobile) It's our native "Christmas tree".

The outdoor surviving skill :- the hiker left 3 plastic bottle on the ground of the trail & the rain water dropped into the bottle through the leaves of a palm tree during the raining day. Anyone who is running out of drinking water in the jungle can drink this water.

Sundew (Drosera burmanii) found in the open area:

    Sundew is a carnivorous plant:

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Once again, thanks for the photographs and the crazy hike but fresh air aplenty there. The pitcher plants remind me of my childhood time in Lim Chu Kang.

Could you describe the survival bottle thing more? It's interesting! Looks like the bottles were stoppered by the branches?

the bottles hang under the "twig" so that rainwater flowing down will be guided into the bottle.
