two things:

1. if you flash why you still use ISO400?
2. the background is such a nice black, I think can try use a matt black sheet to cover the pot can camouflage it quite well.

one more thing, if you use a 60mm macro instead, will it give you more DOF (due to shorter focal length)? or perhaps it will get cancelled out because you now need to be closer to your subject.

low lighting situation, had to use highspeed sync. anyway, as for the ISO, it doesn't matter because I always apply neatimage to the photos :P, although a ISO 100/200 will give more details.

I have spare velvet if you need somemore, but why do you want to camo your pots? just repot them into black pots :P

given the distance between the camera plane and subject, the DOF is already so thin, even with a 50mm it doesn't help much. But I believe a shorter macro will defintely help. Benny, got a spare 60mm macro?

can see your black pots in some of the pix. perhaps if you wrap it in black felt or something it will merge into the black background, then the pix will be orket book standard


but frankly I would rather you not apply neatimage, you mean your flash is not strong enough?

haha, but wouldn't that make yr plant floating if the pot merges with the background?

flash is strong, but adjusting is really a PITA to get the correct exposure and angle. But i think 2 flash will do greater things

Let me know, i can loan you my ST-E2 and flashes. Not shooting anytime soon. I love the dark velvet background which absorb the light . Actually the pots give the subject distance but i also like it floating. Even tilly are shot with black velvet backdrop and floating in mid air.

Eh... Question: Are you growing them in dried moss or chaocoal? Those in pots are terrestrial orchids?

mostly are just spagnum moss, some are charcoal with moss on top and also perlite and moss combo

also depends on the species u have. seedling aka keiki/babies can stay moist. species like phal requires dry out period before you water again. my mom usually water when the moss has dried up. Den also the same, water the media, then water when the media is dry. Whats species you referring to?

the D. Peguanum is usually on charcoal, requires bright sunlight
as for the hybrid, it should be on moss, just rewater when the moss dry up
