Before the season starts, I would appreciate any information on these Altum Angels about how hobbyist kept their angels well in their tank.

Yes, there are many information on the net but i would really appreciate are those hands-on experience from the hobbyist here.

Many thanks before the thread starts its journey. I will be jotting down information and hope those interested would benefit too.

A good altum is one that's alive! Quote from a wholesaler/distributor!

Seems they are frustratingly hard to keep alive.
last year 90% of exports of altums from SA were KO'ed. Such a waste.

A couple of weeks back one of my altums broke it's jaw[don't know how] and died a week later.

Have 8 left now and have been with me for almost 1.5 years.

One has pop eye. Removed it to hospital tank and treating with oxycure and MG. May consider anti biotics later.

Sigh, very concerned, hope i don't lose another.

Broken jaw most likely mean your angels were fighting. Either pre-spawning activities (most likely) or territorial. Female cichlids usually jaw lock males to test their strength...

Jaw locking in fishes can be due to stress and they are usually fatal. Sometimes when they are stressed, they breadth very heavily with their mouths and gills causing the jaw to dislocate.
It's like when you see ghosts and you open your mouth so big in shock that your jaw gets "lock" and cannot close after that.

Thanks, I was looking for the parameters of their natural habitat. Great... i think i shall use my 4ft tank for the altum angel... as my 4ft tank's ph is abt 4.5... beside the tank is matured and i shall transfer all my cardinals tetra to the newly 3ft tank then..

    Great Information.. Cheers!!!
