Yup, your plants are crawling as they found that they do not need to grow upwards anymore for the light...
Just cut them below the crawling portions and new shoots should grow upwards more before crawling again...

Many people would want their MM to crawl but can't...

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
Actually, if you leave them uprite, they should grow upwards.
Mine crawl only if you make them, under good lightings of course.
I can only think of one thing that may cause it => current flow. If there is water current directing at the stems of the MMs, this will inevitably caused the new shoots to grow sideways. With good lights, they will root and stay grounded.
smallfish, you are right, I think it is the curent pusing the shoot from vertical to horisontal, after a while roots are growing and start to crawl.
By the way can I just cut the crawling roots?
Yes, cut and dispose the horizontal stem and replant those shoots with roots directly in soil.
But as long as the current is there, your 'problem' persists. Try directing the current away from your MMs.
