I guess you remembered wrongly. I visited a month back and prices were about the same.

    Hi all,
New to this forum, this thread caught my attention.
Currently I'm using Dennerle products E15 Iron, S7 trace elements, Gold 7, UP brand liquid fert and horti sticks.
I have only been in Aquascaping for only 1++ years.

If I understand correctly from the above, K2SO4 and MgSO4 are another alternative to liquid fert. Thus I still have to use the E15 and S7 for my plants, right?
Or is it that I can give up the E15 and S7?

Dennerle's products are getting expensive though, and planning to cut cost on the fertilizers.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

BTW, this is really a great site for informative discussion, will engage you guys in more discussions. Thanks.

Reference this article Calculating dosages of fertilizer elements for a planted tank, a teaspoon of K2S04 will add about 20ppm of K in a standard 2.5ft tank. I do that weekly as recommended and that kilo of powder can last me more than a year. I am also dosing my 4ft tank with K at the same time.

    Hi dreamgarden,

    Welcome to AQ!

You can give up E15 and S7, BUT you must find alternatives to replace them. S7 is trace elements and E15 is iron. There are many brands of trace fert out there... UP is one of them. For iron, there are liquid additives like Seachem Flourish Iron and many others. Recently, I'm trying out a solid substrate iron fert from ISTA which turned out to be laterite balls.

Most liquid ferts are little short on Mg and K, so some of us supplement it using K2SO4 and MgSO4.

Note: If you change fert, you might get algae problems initially as you would probably have balanced your tank based on the ferts you're using (diff brands have diff amounts each element). Especially cos you're using Gold7 as it supposed to be able to prevent algae.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

How about Iron ? I bought a bottle of UP brand Iron liquid at $15 and it didn't last me very long ! Does iron supplement also comes in the form of crystal mentioned here that sounds really economical ?

Or do we just drop a tiny iron nail into the tank ?? ;p

    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Vinz, Thanks for the tip.
I have been using ISTA laterite ball too for about a year, can't see any effect on the plants. But for E15 it really does work, can observe veins on the leaf after 3 weeks of usage. That is why wasted a lot of $$ on it. Will try those liquid iron you recommended.

    Plants need the following:

    Macro Nutrients:
    N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg

    Micro Nutrients:
Fe, Mn, Co, B, Cu, Zn, Mo.

    The source of nutrients:
    Fish food: N, P
    Wastes: N
    Water hardness: Ca, Mg
    K Supplement(eg. Seachem Potassium, K2SO4, KCL): K
    N Supplement(eg. KNO3): N
    P Supplement (eg. KH2PO4): P
Liquid fertilisers (eg. Seachem Flourish, Sera Florena, TMG, etc.): most micronutrients + some K and Mg

I basically add 20ppm K (via K2SO4) weekly after water change. Trace elements I used Dr Mallick's -- 3 drops a day (some people say it's already too much). N and P are provided in the fish food/waste. That's about it.
