    Plants for a vivarium?

    Hi

I'm planning to setup a vivarium? not sure if this is the right term....

Basically i'm planning to have a layer of lapis sand, a column of water about 4 inches and having branches sticking out....lastly, a small pump with several tubes directing water to drip from the top of the branches....

Would like to ask what commonly available plants I can use in such setup? moss on the branches? nanas in the water? and some plants sticking out of the water?

    Thanks!!

    More information might help.

How big is your proposed tank? What animals are you thinking of to keep in the tank? Any aircon for the room location? What is the lighting for the tank? Are you planting in the water? Or is there a land area? etc...

A lot of plants can be used... If you are thinking of planting in the water and having the plants grow emersed, do note that most stem plants do not do very well in such set ups and they will crawl, rather then stay erect... Polygonum sp. is one that will stay and grow upwards...

If you are planting on wood and have the water run on the wood, then mosses and nanas are good choices... Riccia and HC are also good alternatives... but do note that Riccia, once introduced is difficult to be totally completely removed from any set up.

Some terrestrial plants love their feet in water, while some love humid conditions but loathe wet feet... So, let us have more information...

Its a 2 x 1 x 1 glass tank, no land area, just a layer of lapis sand with 4" of water....will have branches sticking out of the water and water flowing down.... thinking of having moss on the branches, nanas in the water and some plants to stick out of the water..... very basic fuss free setup, normal room temperature, very minimal lights....

Minimal light means stemmed plants will not be really suitable... Mosses might be ok...

Nanas will do find!... You can also try smaller specimens of Java fern.

i tried money plant once before...unfortunately took it out as it grew too fast in that one footer...anyhow, for plants...just look around your estate, car park for moses, ferns, etc...works really nice for me...

I would strongly suggest that you take a stroll amongst your neighbourhood parks and walkways... You can find a lot of suitable plants there. Also, a visit to Teo's farm or a nursery will usually result in a lot of useful plants for a vivarium... No need to order from LFSs.

Also, you might want to up your lighting so you can keep more plants...

Davwong, the location of Teo's Farm had been discussed umpteenth times... You can do a search for it in AQ. Jewel orchids are not really suitable for vivariums, unless you are able to keep it cool. They can be found at orchid nurseries.

Cacatuoides, you are welcomed. But please try not to overdo your collecting of plants... You won't want uniformed personnel (whoever they might be) asking you why are you plucking/digging up the walkway!

Most aquatic plants can be used for emersed culture, as long as the environment is humid and there is strong lighting. But stemmed plants need a lot of sun to do well and then most do not stay erect for long also. The effect will then not look too good... But 1 good stem plant to use is the Polygonum sp. as mentioned previosuly.

Echis are good but they grow too big... You can try Echinodorus tellenus, but it needs strong lighting to grow well emersed...

You can try crypts, nanas, mosses, java ferns, HC, riccia, hairgrass, amongst all the rest... Explore and you will find more...

Wouldn't the frog eventually go for the pencil fishes?

Erm....we'll try out and see how it goes
*Don't think the pencilfish can fit into the mouth of the feeder frog(1cm)*

Having fun playing with the setup
Attempting to set up smaller ones soon...
