What I know is that Onyx will actually bring up the PH of the water slightly... as for Fluorite... think its neutral... so you may have to consider these too...

I've heard Flourite is very dusty. Onyx will be the better choice amongst the two imho. Flourite's minus-point will be its multicolours too; Onyx is just black and nice enough.
How about ADA Aquasoil Amazonia if you can overbudget?
Aesthetic wise, Onyx will look better. Unfortunately, I have not used Onyx but some others here have used them with crypts to good effect.
I have used Flourite, and find it very good for crypts as well, but the downside as mentioned by Squee is that, they are very dusty.
Quixotic, do u add any base fert to supplement the nutrients for the crypts or u using Fluorite by itself?
Nope, but I do add Root Monster or Ferka Rosette as supplements. Mine is a non CO2 low tech tank, and I don't add anything else.
FYI, Flourite itself contains micro nutrients, so it can be used on its own. For macro nutrients, you would probably dose as what you do with planted CO2 tanks.

ADA is the same price as Flourite the last time i enquired at NA though i'm not sure if the weight is the same for each bag. If the price is the same and the weight between the two brands are about the same than i'll highly recommend ADA.

Is base fertilizer needed or recommended with Onyx? If yes, any particular brand to go with Onyx. Or can we use JBJ or JBL? Thanks.
don't worry, be happy
Not needed either, can use on its own.
For Crypts go for the Flourite RED. It has more Fe for the hungry Crypts. With that dose lesser Fe.

For the Onyx, are you guys referring to Onyx gravel or sand? Not familiar with them and saw both on Seachem web site.
I am thinking of changing my current ADA Powersand/Aquasoil. Can't stand the "melted" soil after one year. Will Flourite has similar problem as it was mentioned that it is very dusty?
Thanks.
Not too sure, but I think it's the Onyx Sand. I may be wrong but I don't remember seeing Onyx Gravel here.
In my experience, Flourite will not disintegrate over time in the tank. The dustiness comes with the package itself, and doesn't increase over time in the tank.
However, I can't say the same if it is out of water. I do find it dustier as time goes by but this may not be the all conclusion that it will disintegrate out of water.
