    Is my filter working properly.

My nitrite level is still high (top of the scale in my test kit) after 3 weeks of starting my tank. I think it reads 5-6 ppm. I only added bacteria once.
My ammonia level is almost zero. I have abt 15 fishes in a 2 ft planted tank. My tank is from Juwel.

Is this normal or is there something wrong with my filter?

3 weeks? You tank is still cycling. It'll take some time for the bacteria that converts nitrite to nitrate to set in.

Secondly, you have fishes in there already. They are probably contributing to the high nitrite. If its a planted tank, you can let the tank cycle without fishes. Then slowly add them in to let the tank ecology adjust to new sources of ammonia

From your numbers, it looks like your filter is fine, cos ammonia is being converted to nitrite. So give a few more weeks.

So it is alrite at this stage to notice high level of nitrite. Relief. Because I was told by "experts" to revamp my filter again, that will be my last resort.

btw... My plants seems to be growing but they also turn brown quite easily. So I am always able to see bright green new shoots, but the older shoots appear to be brownish. Is this again a new tank syndrome?
Most of my plants are high-growth plants, though I don't really know their names.

    THanks for any advise

bennyp: your tank has too many fish too soon. what fish do you have in there? i'm surprised that the high nitrite level hasn't killed them. anyhow, feed them sparringly for now and do frequent water changes. and don't disturb your filter media, your tank is still cycling.

your plants will regrow and acclimatise to your tank conditions too.

indeed many fishes I added last week died. Mostly cardinals and guppies.
Now left with 2 cardinals, SAE, Ottos and corys. Maybe they have gotten use to the high nitrite level.

Still thanks for your advise, and I will test the nitrite level again next week.
