It can be very frustrating not getting what you wanted. For my case, i prefer to choose the Apistos myself. If indoubt, don't buy.
Observe the pair first to comfirm that they are a pair before you make your purchase. Females usually have short dorsal and ventral fin. Caudal fin will not be as colourful as the male. Look out for the yellow breeding dress they don when in breeding mood. Also, the black ventrals in most females.
We can't do anything regarding the locality of where the Apistos are collected. This we got to thrust the shop.
In the case of mixed female. That will be a big problem because most females look the same. Will take an expert to tell them apart. 
Bringing a friend who knows about Apistogrammas when buying may help too!
