Hey guys, just came to my mind. When you're buying a pair of apistogramma from shop, any shop, do you trust them on giving you a pair? Or do you choose yourself? Or rather, how do you ensure you got a pair of the same varient or collection location?

Or even if they gives you a male of one species, and they match it with another species female, how are you going to tell apart?

Just want to learn more tips on gender ID here : )

    Let's discuss.

It can be very frustrating not getting what you wanted. For my case, i prefer to choose the Apistos myself. If indoubt, don't buy.

Observe the pair first to comfirm that they are a pair before you make your purchase. Females usually have short dorsal and ventral fin. Caudal fin will not be as colourful as the male. Look out for the yellow breeding dress they don when in breeding mood. Also, the black ventrals in most females.

We can't do anything regarding the locality of where the Apistos are collected. This we got to thrust the shop.

In the case of mixed female. That will be a big problem because most females look the same. Will take an expert to tell them apart.

Bringing a friend who knows about Apistogrammas when buying may help too!

Me have the same thinking as genes. No choosing mean no buy.

Yup, I guess got to observe the fish closely before purchasing.

Trust is the key. Reputation of the lfs is very important in this respect.

Hopefully there'll be more of such specialised shops around.

I believe the next closest, in terms of specialities or pro, is Azmi. Wonder if he carries any at the moment. Have not been to his shop since he shifted.

Just waiting for the arrival of the ada magazine, then I will drop to catch up with him.

trust for the shop is important as well as the reputation the shop has too!!

Often, many lfs sell apistos in their wrong identity and anyhow name them. It is important where you buy your apistos from as quality plays a part too.

Take time to observe the fish and determine their sex so as to justify your buy.

As genes had said, best to bring a friend who knows about apistos!

Good to see the passion for apistos getting better. It is important to get someone experienced to go select the apsito if you are not sure.

PS: Hmm.... Tempted to get another pair

Yup, as LFS's owner may not know what they are selling , too many types of apistogramma out there.
