Can anyone help? My newly planted tank just setup about 1 mth ago have alot of these dark green hairy algae grow on the gravel and also on the plants.

Can anyone suggest how to get rid of them and what cause them to grow?

Another question.What is the media used for the filters for planted tanks?

Try Yamaoto Shrimps for the algae on the gravel. SAE may also help if it is Black Beard Algae growing on the plants. The shrimps can be bought from Petmark at $12 per pack of 20.

Filter media is usually filter floss and sometimes together with ceramic rings to promote biological filtration. But never stuff like carbon pads or chemical materials that remove ammonia etc. Plants need those nutrients.

heard that some barbs eat algae. neon rosy barbs? and that they will nibble on plants too.

What is the main cause for algae to grow on the gravel & also the leaves of plants?

Suggest buy one pack of shrimp to try first. And remember to acclimatise them to the tank -- this is very important as the shrimps are quite fragile in new enviromnent. Don't stress them.

The algae got an upper hand in a new tank because of nutrient imbalance. You may have too much nutrients in the tank but your plants have not settled down yet. Some fast growing plants can help. I usually like to use fast growing floating plants like FrogBits or Salvinia as they are easily removed. Free-floating Hornwort works as well.

After a while, your plants would have adjusted and you may even see less spot algae growing on the glass even with the same amount of lighting and fertilising.

Can anyone post the picture on the plants mentioned above? As I'm new and could not figure out how the plants look like bas on their names.
