Do you guys cover your apistogramma tank?

I am cycling some tank using small red fish. Left about 2 inch gap above water level. Just less than an hour, one of the tank is missing the red fish. Oh, on the floor and dried.

Maybe leaving 3inch gap will be better? Or got to have it covered up?

I heard apistogrammas can be good jumpers, but luckily i have not had any experience of them jumping out. I leave about 10-15cm gap above the water level.

If you are keeping them in a small tank and the tank does not have the height to allow you to reduce the water level much, i would suggest you cover up the tank.

I fancy placing larger-than-tank driftwood as decor. Thus, the wood are all protruding out of the tank.

Now I guess what I will do is to surround the the top edge of the tank with acrylic sheet of about 2inch width. Cos I have the notion that fish will go near the glass wall and jump from there. I reckon they won't jump from the middle out of the tank. Or will they, at least not so for apistogramma...

    Lol!
No offence but when I first view it, I thought it was meant for Lake Tanga's shell dwellers..

I don't think this is the set-up/biotope for apistogrammas..
In the wild, they live in blackwater rivers; crystal clear, nutrient-poor and stained with tannin acid.

It dosen't really matter actually how you house your apistogrammas. All that matters is that you enjoy their presence in the aqua-scape of your choice, making sure that the tank environment is healthy will ensure that your apistos are healthy.

Ya, this tank is meant for Lamprologus meleagris. But didn't manage to get hold of any.

Thus, have taken out everything and coverted to apistogramma instead.

    Hi carlfsk,

I am really new to apistos, but are you planning to use the same setup for apistos? No doubt apistos generally like hiding places, but I thought an environment which has more greenery and ada soil would be better for the apistos?

Not looking for trouble here, just want to clarify okay. So I hope carlfsk you are not pissed off. If you are then I apologise. No doubt it looks pretty impressive, but is it possible for apistos to live in carlfsk's setup happily? Or are you planning to plant the tank?

I'm also currently looking for a tank cover for my apisto tank, am convinced that it is really necessary after my female betta attempted a prison break due to my carelessness. Now she's half-dead in fox river. my driftwood is also protruding a little, any advice/lobangs for effective tank covers would be most warmly welcomed! Thanks!

Maybe it's because your female betta didn't plan the escape well enough!
    Lol!

    Okie, jokes aside..
Can those hard nettings be used as a cover?

    Hi there

Firstly, congrats on your new apisto from Dimas.
Secondly, NO! you are not creating trouble here, we are all here to learn from one another.

Having ADA aquasoil or plants are not a necessity for keeping apistos. Not everyone can afford these gravel.

Generally, breeders like to use gravel that can maintain a low pH of the water. So ADA aquasoil comes into the picture. If you are not using ADA aquasoil, you can always peat your tank like some of the apisto keepers here do to achieve a low pH.

A happy apisto is one that lives in a healthy tank environment with lots of hiding space. Creating caves with driftwoods, rocks, pots or plants etc.

You can use floating plants as your cover. Natural cover. Best is frogbits.
My apisto tanks are covered 70% on the surface by frogbits.

And you do not need to use aquasoil per se. using lapis sand (like leeruisheng's setup) or just white sand (my setup) with peat, can be successful in keeping apistogrammas as well.

Don;t need to be apologetic about how you view. Everyone ask questions and have their own views. Open-mindedness allows better flow of knowledge.

I think some have mistaken that I will be using the tank as shown in the picture for my apistogramma. But no. The picture is just for illustration on how I intend to cover up the edges of the apistogramma tank in a bid to prevent them from possible landing on the floor, and becomes ikan billis.

    hey guys,
haha icic, thanks gene! will try my best to take good care of the apistos lol.
carlfsk, i think your idea's pretty cool, and not to mention cost effective. i have a few of those cardboards at home, maybe i'll try for my 2ft tank too! however, is there any particular reason why apistos will jump? is it common for them to jump out of their tanks? ie. is it necessary to have a proper tank cover?

also, valice mentioned that floating plants are good, the apisto tank which i'm preparing now has duckweed which covers about 20% of the surface, will that deter the apistos from jumping? coz i really don't want more cases of prison breaks. also, i heard that duckweed does grow pretty fast? was also told that apisto fries may enjoy swimming around the duckweed roots, that's why i got them.

btw carlfsk, my apologies for mistaking that as your apisto tank! although i must still say that your tank still looks pretty cool to me..
