IMHO, your lighting isn't enough to reach the bottom portion of the plant or that there isn't enough nutrients being absorded by the plant to sustain the plant. Therefore causing the lower portions which already receives lesser light to wither away.

Can see that there are healthy root along the stem. Why not snip the plant, just below the roots and replant it? Clear the dead ones while u're doing it. Personally, I cut the dead ones as short as possible and replant the 'reborn' ones just beside it.

yeah as Aquaculture said, that happen when lower part of your plant does not get enough light. Probably due to the top leaft blocking the light. You can cut and replant the healthy portion or you can also deligently trim to make sure light goes all the way to bottom

for stem plants, you need to plant them in indivdual stalks about 1 cm apart.
this will ensure light reaches the bottom of each plant stalk.

Shadow and mordrake is right. The other thing to consider is the depth of the tank.

For a 3 feet tank, your lighting of 18 and 20 W is a bit low for most plants to thrive well. The plants suitable for this kind of set up are possibly moss, java ferns, anubias type plants.

As you are enriching with CO2 injection, aim for 3 watts/gallon or more.

38W for 50.5galon is very-very low, you need more light, unless your tank got direct sunlight during the day.

I'm not a whizz when it comes to electrical issues. I simply changed my tubes to a higher voltage, seems brighter though and working fine after 3mths. There should be a corelation with the ballast but I didn't really think of how it would affect then or am I achieving the light's full potential...

Hi, Andrew, you'd need about 108-144W to grow stem plants for your 3ft tank.
Get 4x36 pls. Phillip 865 would be good enough.
