planning to start a moss wall. Taiwan or java better? noobie here. i got no chiller. got 2x 36w light. 2 ft tank. Any pro can help?
Hi first of all welcome to AQ. I'm no pro at moss but i think you need to specify what you mean by better?
Better could mean
1 Easier to grow
2 Grows faster
3 Nicer

you don't have chiller? but do you have a fan then? moss tends to love cooler water

personally taiwan moss looks better than Java moss, more branches. The both easy to grow and grow very fast with the right condition. Get some fan, it will ddrop your water temp by about 2 degree, the drawback is you need to do water top up every day.
In my experience with moss wall, the bottom part grow slower than the top part. So what I do is put it on the substrate until it grow nicely and then move it up.
oh thanks for all the advice. My better means nice and easier to grow without a chiller. I think i will invest in a fan. :-) The links are useful.

Both are them are easy to grow, and "nice" I guess is subjective. Both of them are easy growers, require little or no ferts, little lights, filter/no filter, and both of them can tolerate higher temperature(though with cooler temperature they will do better)

Could someone please specify the correct temperature for growing moss reasonably fast and healthy? I live in eastern India and summer temperature here gets into the 40 degree celcius. I guess water temperature is around 32 then (I could be wrong). Will it kill the moss? I can't afford a chiller. Any help/suggestion will be appreciated.
32 degree is very warm, with fan you probably can drop it to 29-30 degree. You can try putting some ice cube.
Hi all, l have to ask what type and if can brand also for good temperature guage. wondering if can l use an old house fan not being use( hope its not a stupid question).
At least now know that try to grow moss put at bottom let it grow faster first then bring it up.
you can use any fan, I'm using DIY fan from old computer.
As of now I have kept them in large earthen pots which keeps the water cool through evaporation. Ice cube is what i have in mind but ........
the fans really works very well sia. Even my hair grass benefits from it. I see so many new strands growing out within such a short time. thanks for all the advice. finally got the moss wall up. Think now need to wait for a month to see results. I got SAE, otocinclus inside. Will they eat the moss?
otos are save for moss, not sure about SAE though

SAE's will eat moss if they are not kept distracted with fish pellets.

true, better stay away SAE, they will eat moss.
this may be a bit belated but i think spiky moss wall looks nicer than taiwan
spiky moss also tends to be a bit hardier than most so it should do better for you since temperature is a concern
agreed, spiky mosses look better and are more hardy. You can even try anchor moss, they look pretty good too when walled up.
Anyone has got pics of SAE? What does SAE stand for? Sorry arr... but I'm really noob.
