    Hi bros,

would like to share that my pair of Ap. Cacatuoides have produced its 2nd batch of free swimming fries yesterday.....

The 1st batch was produced at the beginning of November and the 2nd batch was this week, almost 6 weeks later....

The 1st batch had only 6 surviving and healthy fries while the 2nd batch counts to 18.....and the female is only about 4.5months old!!!

I wish to make a point that good genetics or source of the parents is very important in my opinion....The female's parents are from Hong Kong while the male is from Peru..... Both showcases excellent quality in terms of body shape, distinctive markings and amazing colors, especially on the female where the whole row on the top of the dorsal has a red tint and on her caudal fin too....

Moral of the story is not to save a few bucks and settle for average or lousy fish but it pays off to fork out a little more to acquire a good pair of apisto if you're serious about it (I was also playing with cheapo apistos in the beginning when I finally learnt the true value of premium apistos which cost just a little more)

    Just my 2 cents

ps. I will try to take pictures and post it when I can

Thanks eugene!! No regrets buying the pair from you but I'm only using one of the females to breed with my peru male....there'll be a new owner taking over the pair....hehe

Kind of excited and stuck to apistos once again, but have to be contented with this pair and stick to my current 2 tanks!!! or else......

Just an update: Currently having the pair housed in my low-tech tank while I've siliconed a partition to my other 2ft tank, one batch of fries on each side....

Fries from the 1st batch is showing early signs of little coloration!!! They're only 6weeks old.....really interesting to watch them grow up into little cacas!!!

Latest update: Male seems a little bored and listless, swimming around on his own, female is seen spending time in her usual spawning cave!! Suspect that another batch of eggs has been laid early this morning again!!! 3rd batch in less a week from the 2nd batch!! now no space to hold the male separately!!

    Hi Eman,

As spoken, my situation is the same as yours. "Male seems a little bored and listless, swimming around on his own, female is seen spending time in her usual spawning cave". But i think i wont be getting the male out of the tank. Because currentyly really cant find a place to hold the male. So if the male is not taken out. what will happen? the male will be killed by the female? the male will eat the fries? Please advice and recommend. Thanks.

Other fishes and male will eat the fries. Remove fries to another tank. Keep parent pair to continue breeding.

    In my experience,

    1. Chance of male being killed by female
    2. Male will eat up fries

I have very low chances of fries survival when my male is inside...

thanks eman. today is the 3rd day when i notice the female guarding the cave. i have taken the male out. now the female is like darker not as yellow as before. the female wll also come out to explore the tank. does that mean that the female is stress? when are the fries be free swimmers? or is there no eggs in the cave.

Don't worry too much about her, just let her be....different females show different behaviour, no 2 females show the same behaviour.....just feed her as normal, don't let her go hungry!

    3-4days from eggs to wrigglers
about 4 days from wrigglers to free swimming

This is especially true for breeders. Good genes gives good offsprings. But good genes often comes at a premium price due to two factors. Collection location for wild caught or selective breed from reputable breeders.

However, if you are a beginner, I think it's safer to start with cheaper staple fishes and progress on from there.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Your A.cacatuoides is doing really fine. You'll need more tanks soon housing all those fries

Good news this morning, my female has transferred red little tiny wrigglers from her cave to the inside of a flower pot, just next to the cave.....they too tiny to be counted, i still a patch of red dots inside the flower pot....should see them free swimming in about 4-5days time...

Meanwhile, feeding both parents brine shrimp and bloodworms.....female looks damn good in her very bright yellow dress!!! this is the 3rd successful spawn since I got them in november last year

Hey Jason, my "farm" is just like any others.....a tank with all the necessary
The main factor is the great bond between the male and the female, this helps a lot to get them breed anytime, anywhere....

They actually bred in one of the partitions (1footer) meant for growing up fries, not in their main breeding tank (2footer)....

hmmm.... i think the method for them to breed well is using ada soil... cos when i got the caca from u, they are in a tank fill with ada. three days later they spawn... then when i transfer to other tank(normal sand), nv spawn le... now i have transfer them to new tank with lapis sand... trying whether they will breed not... hee... congrats to u eman... can open apistos farm soon... haa... cheers...

Please don't say that...there are many other fellow brothers who are quietly breeding various species of apistos in their tanks! oops!

Yea, the one key factor is also ada soil which makes it easier for low ph

but one thing is, each spawn size is still very small, about 10 fries per spawn...

What apistos are you keeping? Some apistos can be easier to breed then others.
