    Hi there,

This happens after I changed the water last week. And it has been cloudy since.
Tiger shrimp is dying one after another.
Any idea why is this so?

My tank is almost 3 month old planted with glosso, 11 rummy,2 otos and a few cherry shrimp.
    PL 55w lighting 7 hrs ,CO2 1 bps.

    cheers

The most obvious reason is that you stirred up the substrate, if that is not the case then i don't know. Easiest solution is to get an anti-floculant that binds the dust into heavier particles that sink, clears up the water immediately, but shrimps are known to be sensitive. Running the filter that captures finer grain materials like diatom may be another option. Usually the water clears up in a few days for me.

Did you add any anti chlorine/chloramine? could be the reason for the deaths.

How much water did you change mano?

spyder79, your post might have been deleted due to suspicion of post-chalking activities, because we've seen too many cases of people chalking posts up to 10 so they can just use the marketplace. Therefore, try not to post too much in a short time.

However, it might have just been a simple misunderstanding. I apologise. I've since un-deleted your post.

Be patient mano. Normally matured tanks get chalky after a filter wash or more than necessary water change but it seems that it is not in your case. At times, there may be some imbalance and a sudden bacteria bloom is created. It should be alright in a day or two since your tank is matured.

By the way, what type of filter you are using? In usual case, you still need time for the bacteria to get colonised in the wool of the filter. Check whether your filter is cloaked. If so, don't change all the wool. Half will do. Remember to use tank water to rinse the media in your filter.

On the other hand, if it doesnt cloak up (the wool is not very blackish), leave your filter alone.

When i started my 4 feet tank, it took 4 months to turn the water cystal clear. Smaller tank will turn clear faster. Add more plants and reduce bioload if you could. Plants are the best filter we have.

Are you using any form of chemical filtration eg activated carbon?

I have just added Chemi pure today after major water change [3/4].
Noticed that the water is 'greening' before I change water.
Is that what they 'green water'?

I too had this issue before when I first started, my problem for me was due to poor mechanical filtration. The filters that I used had some issues and the cloudy water did not clear up after 2 months. This then led to the green-water I had.

After which I changed the filters to a more reputable brand, 2 weeks after that, my 5 footer's water is clear enough to look through from end-to-end.

You might want to take a look at your filter and have more fine wool added, also, for the time being to stop the water changes and monitor further after the addition of more wool.

    Cloudy water

I had this problem too when i set up my new tank recently. It did not seem to be a filtration(mechanical) problem as the 'cloud' will return 2 days after water change. The situation continued for about two weeks until i read somewhere that the 'cloud' could be a build up of bacteria (the unwanted ones).
The solution that worked well for me is to introduce the bottled bacteria that will help to de-nitrate water and boost biological filtration cycle. Results visible right after 24hrs of introduction. There is quite a few options available at the LSH, the one i used is Strees-Zyme from API.
Hope this could resolve your problem.

    Cheers
