    Is it normal for a chiller to run approximately 2.5hrs to bring the temp in my 4X1.5X1.5 (250l) tank from 27 to 25. Bought this Atman chiller from a fellow hobbyist... told that is enough fro a 4 ft tank. Even got an external temp probe so that the chiller dosen't kick in/out so often. My bills have sky rocketed!!! The chiller runs 2.5hrs stops for 3hrs then starts back for another 2.5hrs and so on... is it undersized for my tank? Tanks set up as follows.
    Tank->Skimmer->2026->OR6500->Valve->CO2 reactor->Chiller->UV->Tank
    Help Meeeee.......My wife's somewhere with the bill in one hand and an AXE in the other! Should I change the chiller to a CL650/CL450? This hobby is turning out to be quite Expensive....

    What chiller is this? i mean the model...would you happen to know?

    Most probably, this chiller is terribly undersized for your tank and whoever sold you this chiller probably lied through his teeth or really didn't care because he/she didn't know any better and just said yes because he/she wanted to sell the chiller.

    From prior experience, 4x2x2 tank on Resun CL650 is about $30-$40 per month. Also from what I gather from other hobbyist, it's about the same amount, hope the information helps. Surely, that amount does not warrant a axe.. The hobby is only costly when you follow blindly, some research beforehand will do you wonders.
    Don't get the CL450, probably under power. If long term investment, look at Teco. Try sgreef the local marine forum, you might find some good second hand deals there or the great halls of Azmi. ( saw some extremely tempting offers on Teco, call him before going down ).

    1st look seems to me your setup is able to cool and maintain the lower temperature. But it took a long time to cool down. My suggestion is to separate your filtration from your chiller.

    Tank-->surface skimmer-->2026-->UV-->tank

    Tank-->OR6500-->C02 reactor-->valve ?-->chiller-->tank

    Another question is where do you place your chiller? If it's inside the cabinet, then there is the fault of the prolong cooling down time frame. Tell us your chiller placement before doing the drastic change as mention above.

    If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

    I don't know wat model it is and the seller (Nick:Natural) dosen't know too. Well knew it was fishy when he said the Atman was better by far then the Resun.... Something to do with which country it was made from... Nevermind lesson learned. Yes the chiller is placed in the cabinet but the doors have vents and i placed an eductor to force vent out hot air. I don't want to split the system configuration as this would mean i would have another piece of equipment drawing electricity . $30-$40 a month is great... Whats the difference with the resun and Teco? If the teco gonna save me $$$ in the long run... I BUY!!!

    Teco or artica will surely save you money in the long run.. however, the starting cost of investing in one is like $1200?? compared to a resun which is like $500?? Saving won't be that much either..so in order to make up the difference, it has to be a really LONG run..haa..but yes.. in the end you save.

    Yes, as Ranmasatome put it. It's is a "long" term investment. I've been a hobbyist for donkey years but if you think that you may get bored with the hobby within the next few years and move on. The better deal would be the Resun. The new Teco comes with some niffy features, check out from their website.
    Anyway, if you're into rare plants and Crs, you'll recover the amount in no time but as with all investments, work within your means. The hobby is to be enjoyed and not be a slave to....

    Cheerio.

    ya... just got a 2 yr old resun CL650 chiller from the Pasar malam section. Cost me about $180/-. Think I should send it in for servicing before integrating it into my setup? Anyone know how much to service and where to go? Dun think i'll get bored with the hobby anytime soon.... But if its gonna bombard me with cost.... don't know whether i can afford to carry on....

    The CL650 is also a good buy, you can send it to Bioplast at boon keng road for maintenance. Like I said earlier, it is an investment.( For higher end models, I also save for 2-3 months before commiting even for some fish at times. )

    Cheers

    Here is a chiller service from another forum. Contact them, they can even mod your CL-650 to perform better.

    By the way, I am in no way involved with this company, just pointing out what is available.

    Sratchuback, your problem is placing the chiller in the cabinet. Even though you left the door of the cabinet opened, it is still an enclosed area. You need to find an alternative place for the chiller. It might also prove that the 1st chiller you had would chill better outside of that cabinet.
