Hi guys, I am having this 'fern'(I am not sure what fern is it but the owner at the polyart who sold it me told me that it came from pilliphines) in my tank for months when it suddenly starts to rot very recently. And the rotting seems to spread like a fire daily. I have tried to remove the rotten/melted portions yesterday, but the rotting and melting seems to continue.

What is happening ? Should I remove the whole 'ferns' entirely to prevent the rotting from spreading to other nearby plants ?

    Hi,

I used to have the same problem with my windelov, the entire bush just melt away. I suspect is due to light. After I transfer it to another tank, the melting stopped. Next is all the new leave started to grow again..

It might be that this particular fern's rhizome is diseased. I would suggest to have it removed from your tank and placed somewhere else for the time being.

Looks like it. But what triggers it ? The ferns hava been pretty stable for the past few months. How to prevent such thing from happening again ?

I can't really answer that question on what is affecting it, but if its only one rhizome and not affecting the rest of your java fern colony it should be fine. It might be due to a fungal or parasitic attack.

    I too have this problem..
It only affects the normal java ferns and not the narrow ones that I have. The affected ferns just brown out and die..Really weird.

I cut it all off and hopefully recovery will soon follow..

It is also another possiblity that poor CO2 is the limiting factor(since I am following EI, can probably rule out the fert regime). Thanks to Peter Gwee for reminding.

    To be safe,
    • I've removed the entire ferns and replace with new specimens,

    • I've also increase the CO2 output,

    • Trying to source for a reactor to replace the current diffusor.

Hope everything will go well from now on. Cheers!
