Bought a couple of fish from WuHu in Tiong Bahru. Problem is, I have no idea what they are. They're labelled as "Barlai" on the tank.

The fish has a silver body, a black spot just before the tail and some black markings on the lower fins.

I hope someone can identify the fish for me.

P.S. This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

Yeah, I know it's going to be hard with just a description. You have any idea what are some of the more common ones available to us? It should get to roughly 4cm in length full grown.

Ok.. The fish in question looks very much like the fish in this link: http://www.geocities.jp/zakkycharacin/060625.html , except it has black markings on the bottom back fins as well.

Characins? Do they have adipose fins?

Interesting that a search on Barlai throws up, among others, a railway station name in India listed in Wikipedia. So a wild wild guess would be a fish from India? Probably a Cyprinid?

From your drawings and what i see commonly now, i would guess the fish to be a Aphyocharax paraguayensis..
Google the name for pictures and tell me if i am right...
If i am... then seriously, i think you should remove it soon...
If you bought only a few.. you'll soon find out that they will nip fins and even scales off your other fishes.

i agree ranma, if it is paraguayensis get rid of them, i had some a few years ago the fish they went in with could take care of themselves but these little buggers caused havoc.

Muahaha, really nasty buggers. I had a few of these before and they will bully other fishes to the extent that some of the victims jumped out from the tank.

Thanks Ranma, for helping identify them. They're in quarantine on their own in a 2 footer. Looks like I'm going to have to set up the quarantine tank especially for them.

Thanks to everyone else who's tried to help.

    Whoa!
    I almost bought them.
I read somewhere that in the wild, they co-exist together with C. hastatus and that the cories seek refuge in them.

    Yup!
    Got it alright!
It's Serrapinnus kriegi and they are the ones who seeks protection amongst the armoured callichthyids.

I bought two of these buggers without realising how nasty they are....the bigger one kept chasing other tetras around and inflicted numerous casualties until I got so fed up that I transferred it to the lou han tank ..what happened afterward is history...

I am still keeping the smaller one as it knows how to behave itself
