    Hi all

Just wondering that if one should connect air tube to the powerhead for marine aquarium? will the fishes lack of oxygen from the bubbles produced and eventually die?

read some forum said that bubbles trapped under/in live rock could cause damage to the rock. is this true ?

    thanks in advance....

Interestly, many people assume that the air bubbles will dissolve oxygen into the water. It doesn't!!! Air exhange only happens on the water surface where the air bubbles pop! Good water agitation at the surface is the best water to ensure air exchanges.

    hope this helps!

So, Cedric, would u advise using a rain bar just above the water surface?

For the purpose of dissolving more oxygen into water, yes, that will be effective. However, that is a very laminar flow for a reef tank.[:0]

    kindly elaborate on laminar flow

    Er...

laminar flow means very uniform, gentle flow of water in a uni-direction. Actual reef conditions are turbulent, non-uniform direction, very strong currents that moves the corals back and forth.

    Hope this helps!

So would you say having two powerheads, one on each end of the tank, would be the best way to go?? Would it be better to have a lower gph powerhead on one side of the tank or keep them the same gph??
I''m going crazy, but that''s okay.. They know me there..

best would be to have two powerhead working on timers.. so that it can create the turbulance in the reef.. but i dun recommend having a high powered powerhead unless your tank is very big...

The flowrate of the powerheads and positions has to be by trail and error. Every tank is different with different aquascaping. Ensure that there are no deadspots. You can use higher power flowrate powerheads as long as they will not tear the coral tissue or damage it.

    Cheers!

not very gd to put ur normal power heads on timers. this will cause more wear n tear to the power head becoz of the constant on n off. as a result, many of them will start to make noise n cant start up . only maxi-jets r recommended for their reliablity n durablilty

yes... but it is the cheapest method that i can think of.. nevertheless, u can consider getting a surge controller.. one of the model that i seen on the book is called, Tunze multicontroller 7092..
and yes.. u need to experiment with the positioning of the powerheads to ensure maximum efficiency..and no dead spots.
