In search for lowland Nepenthes veitchii

Nepenthes veitchii is one of the rarest pitcher plants in the lowland of southern Sarawak. This species is mostly found on the top of tree canopy.

First location is a logging area. We only stayed for half an hour before leaving that area as there is no interesting flora & fauna.


No idea who burned this Kerangas forest & killed all the small trees.






The upper pitcher of Nepenthes mirabilis x rafflesiana. (natural cross hybrid of pitcher plant)






Second location is to revisit the site where I found a fallen N. veitchii in an illegal logging site.

The pitcher plant is dead ....and also its host (the big tree). As this species of pitcher plant is mostly grow high above the forest canopy, it's not easy to find it in this dense limestone forest. We didn't find any N. veitchii except the dead plant.

The population of the wild orchids in this limestone hill is more than I expected as no plant collector has found this secret location yet.

As there are some trees being chopped down illegally, I can find orchids easily from the fallen tree. This one below is most probably Phalaenopsis sumatrana.

In the undisturbed area, I found this big leaf of Bulbophyllum reticulum.

Probably this beautiful snail is Dyakia sp. (Family name = Ariophantidae.)

Just wondering... You are at a place where orchid plunderers had not discovered but loggers is present now. You saw wild orchids on fallen trees and you know it is just a matter of time they die. Will you bring the orchids back?

I only bring 1 or 2 plant per species. I don't think I'll bring back everything cos there are TOO MANY orchids out there & my garden is too small to plant everything.....luckily, nobody discover that secret spot.
